Oil surged above $76/bbl this morning on news that BP is shutting down the Prudhoe Bay Field (largest in U.S.) due to major problems with the Alaska Pipeline.

This is a perfect example of why environmentalists and conservationists do not want the ANWR opened up. BP has a generally excellent environmental record; yet, this corrosion on the pipeline was either ignored or undiscovered for so long that it requires a total shutdown of the pipeline to repair.
