I find this fascinating in a Orwellian 1984 kind of way.

You can go to Afghanistan, Iraq and put your life on the line to defend the Constitution but God forbid you speak out in uniform. What good is it to defend the rights that you yourself can't exercise?

The DOD rules on this are very specific. If you are in uniform you are not to partake in partisian poliitcal events, case closed. It was this way when I was in and it's always been this way. The reason is rather simple. In countries where the military starts involving itself in political matters the next thing you know your president or prime minister also happens to wear a uniform.

Of all people Ron Paul should know the rules regarding this. If he was an honorable man or as you put it a man of integrity he would have told that corporal that he appreciated his support but should really stay off to the side and not call attention to himself. However he did not do this. Like any other career piolitical hack looking for PR he let this naive E-4 get himelf in a bind. Afterall, why shoud he care what happens to him?

Ron Paul has been out of the Military since when? 1966? Things have likely changed. I honestly don't think anyone knew. Now being an armchair lawyer was he officially in Uniform on active duty of did he just have a partial uniform? For me I don't like ANY suppression of speech period.

It was that way back in 1966. Just as it was that in 1946, 1926, etc, etc. If Ron paul is so smart you would have think he would have remembered that pasrt of his service. Especailly since they stress that point even more so with officers. If the corporal did not know, then that's a failure of the Army. If he did know then knowingly violated the rules. As the saying goes ignorance of the rules is no excuse. Doubly so in the military.

If you say so, If this is the best you can come up with then you need to try harder

You're the one who is ignorant of the rules governing this matter, that much is rather obvious. Either your god was ignorant of the rules or he knew them and let that corporal get hmself in a bind. Not sure which one is worse. I'm going to go with the latter due to his prior service.

Another thing, is this corporal a dupe? He should be since he seems to fit your definition. Or do you make an exception since he supports Paul?

Do what you will. Of course I'm ignorant of the rules I was never in the Military. I wasn't there. I've been to political rallies and I'll tell you this much. The fine points of the UCMJ are not one anyone's mind. IMO the only reason this is even an issue is who's rally he showed up at. If he had been at an Obama rally? No Problem.

For somebody who is supposedly a non factor he seems to draw a lot of Attention

There's no doubt this guy knew he was out of line. He's enlisted, not an officer. There are boundaries on when you wear your uniform, and he blew thru them.

My Marine is pretty strict on when and what he does in & out of uniform. Marines won't wear their utilities off-base. It's either their dress or service uniform, or civilian wear. I see Army & Air Force guys walking around Walmart in theirs... and apparently they also show up at political rallies...

Even out of uniform and on leave, my Marine won't discuss politics in any depth, whereas he was quite the conservative activist before he went off to boot camp. I couldn't even get him to roll his eyes when talking about Obama at our kitchen table last month.

Maybe it's just the difference in training or who they let in... 😉

And you sure as heck don't show up at political events in uniform and then address the crowd.
