My Station's workload just went up. What is the norm on working overtime while people are on layoff?
I've been told by diehard union men that you don't work overtime while your union brother is laid off.
I've also been told that working overtime shows the company that there is a shortage of personnel and that they need to increase manpower.
I don't know whether to work overtime or not.
What is the TWU's stance on this?

Working overtime while other people are on layoff is almost as bad as scabbing for NWA or EASTERN, in my opinion.

No overtime ............
NO Fieltrips.............
No Favors!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Insurt Aluminum as needed!!! FURP

Go with the "diehard union men's" stance, and don't work it. From an ethical standpoint, it's just wrong to profit off of someone else's misery (and make no mistake; that's exactly what it is).

The stance that using a lot of OT will force them to recall is flawed because from a fiscal standpoint, it's cheaper for the company to payout OT than to hire or recall, since they don't have to pay for another person's benefits.

The TWU (and IAM in my case) will tell you to "go get yours."

skydrol,

"Princess, and KEV(NW)" ......NAILED the answer, right on the button !!!!!!!!!

Always go with your "gut" feeling.

"YES", there will always be people who will work OT(while others are suffering)...It part of the GREED of man.

Ask yourself the following;

Does the TWU tell Lies ??

IF EVERYONE refused OT, would AA HAVE to recall people from layoff ??

If the answer(s) are YES, then you have your answer to the "gut" question.

You people are f-ing stupid it boggles the mind. There is much difference between the average union worker and a monkey.

Here at AA, OT union members and non-union contractors work side by side, in total bliss.

Do you not have the ability to make a decsion on your own? I laughed so hard reading your question milk came out my nose. Do you ask permission to pee as well?

They are talking about opening up OT up here. I can't wait. A few extra days a month will help out a whole lot.

Hmmm. Is that what you were told to say or did you come up with that witty reesponse all by your self lol.

If nobody works the OT, they've got three choices:

1) move the work somewhere else (somewhat easy to do with aircraft)
2) re-bid the work schedule to meet the revised workload (only requires two or three weeks notice)
3) recalls

Call me a cynic, but I think they'll just reduce the workload for your station and shift it before they'd consider recalling.

Work the OT
If you turn it down they will just force the lowest seniority member to stay.
So the guy that cant or doesnt want to suffers by getting forced.
If you want to work it and need to then do it.

Just remember to work your OT safely and by the book you are probably not 100 percent from working a full shift so just work swiftly but safely
😉

Even if everyone were to stick together and turn it down they would still force people to stay so no one wins but them
