I had no idea that Pan Am made a bid for NWA back in 1989.
What an airline that would've made! ....... interesting read.

Yes, I remember it very well. At NW headquarters, there was a combined route map up on the wall. The NW mgmt employees were actually excited and planning the "integration" strategy.

This bid would have come in the aftermath of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing in an attempt to take advantage of the depressed valuation of Pan Am at the time. What ultimately caused the deal to go South?

Al Checchi and crew out bid Plaskett and Pan Am...

Al Checchi and crew out bid Plaskett and Pan Am...

With the result being the arrival of Anderson, Steenland, Dasburg and the rape and pilferage of Northwest Airlines for close to 20 years until the end (for ruthless PERSONAL PROFIT) of an airline that was once the most consistently profitable in US history.

But that seems to be the noble American way now...esp. for those that love to place politicians owned by corporations into office. There will be more to come no doubt.

Things are mighty HAPPY at the STEENLAND house today..."WE'RE RICH!!!!! WE DID IT TO THOSE STUPID SUCKERS!!!!

Boy did we pull that one OFF....$22 M I L L I O N!! payoff!"

I thought United already had purchased the Pacific in 1984. So, NWA would have gotten LHR and South America and Berlin?

Well, look at it this way, in a way you did get South America, (as reconsitutied by Delta)?
As for LHR, well every Tom, Dick and Harry can now fly to LHR, if they can get a set of slots.

Hey Scuba

Pacific, and South America/Miami Hub (dismantled), LHR went to United

Europe Div, Frankfurt Hub (dismantled), and Shuttle to Delta (Delta has built an impressive 2ed largest carrier to S.America tho)

It's ironic that Delta/Northwest have reconstituted a stronger Pan Am with a serious US domestic system.(lacking at Pan Am)

The FRA hub was still up and running when DL purchased most of PA's remains. After a short time, DL did away with the FRA hub operation.

I seem to recall that Northwest was also looking into the possibility of acquiring Northeast Airlines back in the early 70's, before NEA was ultimately purchased by Delta. (Interesting trivia note: DAL did not own a Boeing airplane until that merger with NEA. And it was NEA who already had the L-1011 on order prior to the merger.)

So, a merger that was contemplated almost 40 years ago will now finally be consummated, as former NWA and former NEA people will be working together after all.

Actually, Pan Am was on its financial deathbed long before it actually went out of business. (As I have observed before, it is hard to kill an airline.) After deregulation the lack of domestic feed for Pan Am caused them to buy National which was not that good an airline to begin with. Even with the purchase of National, they needed to rework a lot of National's routes to provide the feed they needed for the International service. They didn't have the money or the time to do it.

One year, they sold the International Hotel chain (a license to print money in those days) in order to show a profit. The following year, they sold the Pan Am building in Manhattan in order to show a profit. (Does the phrase burning the furniture sound familiar?) The following year Pan Am went out of business because they had nothing left to sell other than the airline. The other airlines decided to wait and pick up routes and a/c cheap at the yard sale.

I believe United got the Africa routes as well but never used them (from LHR)

Looks like Delta has blown the top off the Africa expansion...they launched a huge African expansion today.

I believe Delta aquired many dormant routes (aftrica and others) from Pan Am in 91

I know that for a short period, DL had those 5 747's but not sure when they took delivery of them. Also I believe that DL had firm orders placed for the L-1011 prior to the NE merger. I recall that EA went ahead of DL on the delivery list because they were willing to front some cash for their L-1011's when there were some production delays due to a strike at Rolls Royce. That was also the reason that DL picked up a few DC-10's that went over to UA once the L-1011's started showing up. I still remember reading an article in a DL Digest about one of their Captains' being the only one certified to fly the 747, DC-10, and L-1011. When UA bought the Pacific operation from PA, they sold or traded the L-1011-500's to DL. I seem to think that there was a trade that involved some DC-10's for some reason. On another note with the 727's, DL also had the 1000th one built and had it indicated on the side of the A/C.
