What's new

Pelosi Tunagate ll ?

Politics as normal. Different party same old crap.

Never liked the star Kist commercials anyway. Guess I'll have to find a different tuna maker or just plain stop eating it.

I would like to see the rate increased accross the board and any company who cuts and runs should be sanctioned. Then again, in my reality pigs can fly and I own a Aston Martin. So much for reality.

Dude, your reading comprehension is sorely challenged.

Re-read that article. There is no proposed exemption to the new minimum wage for Pelosi's district in San Francisco. The new minimum wage will not apply to American Samoa, where the current minimum wage does not apply either.

The bill also extends for the first time the federal minimum wage to the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands. However, it exempts American Samoa, another Pacific island territory that would become the only U.S. territory not subject to federal minimum-wage laws.

You should re-read the article,dude..particularly the first sentence in my post regarding the major tuna company in big Nance's district... 😱

One of the biggest opponents of the federal minimum wage in Samoa is StarKist Tuna, which owns one of the two packing plants that together employ more than 5,000 Samoans, or nearly 75 percent of the island's work force. StarKist's parent company, Del Monte Corp., has headquarters in San Francisco, which is represented by Mrs. Pelosi. The other plant belongs to California-based Chicken of the Sea.
Duh.....

While I do not believe exemptions should be granted, the location of StarKists Corp HQ is irrelevant. Wage rates are based on the nation (or in this case territory) where the workers are located. Nike Has HQ here in the US but the people making the sneakers in Asia are not guaranteed US wages just because they work for a US company. Just because StarKist is in SFO does not make it any easier/harder for them to have influence over any politician. Look at oil companies and their influence over the current administration. You think StarKist is going to spend tens of millions of dollars to move their corp HQ if Pelosi did not grant the exemption?

The bottom line is that politicians are business people who are watching out for them selves. They want the other guy to open their books but not their own. As TW pointed out, the visitors log for Clinton should be public but Cheney and Co. do not have to share theirs? Politicians are two faced lying vermin. They lie whenever they move their lips. You seem to be under some delusion that your boys are wearing halos and when they crap it smells like roses. Wake up already.

The difference is American Samoa and the minimum wage law applies everywhere in American territories, possesions and states except where in Pelosi's legislative base the largest employers HQ for that American Samoan factory...and that smells to high heaven.

American Nike is based here and has factories in the Asian countries which are not American possesions, territories or states..

Look at oil companies and their influence over the current administration.

DON'T YOU JUST LOVE IT???

Regardless of your political persuasion, I think it's a crying shame that this stuff goes on and the media lets you know only what it wants you to hear. It is just as wrong for the Media to deliberately let people think Enron was ONLY supporting Bush, as it is for the Republicans to take money from Enron, which I'm sure they did as well as the Democrats.

This is an interesting bit of information that you don't hear much about.
How Enron Worked the President
A. Enron's chairman did meet with the President and the Vice President in the Oval Office.
B. Enron gave $420,000 to the president's party over three years.
C. It donated $100,000 to the president's inauguration festivities.
D. The Enron chairman stayed at the White House 11 times.
E. The corporation had access to the administration at its highest
level and even enlisted the Commerce and State Departments to grease deals for it.
F. The taxpayer-supported Export-Import Bank subsidized
Enron for more than $600 million in just one transaction.
This is SCANDALOUS!
BUT...
The president under whom all this happened WASN'T George W. Bush.

SURPRISE! It was Bill Clinton!

The White House and the Secret Service quietly signed an agreement last spring in the midst of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal declaring that records identifying visitors to the White House are not open to the public.

The Bush administration didn’t reveal the existence of the memorandum of understanding until last fall. The White House is using it to deal with a legal problem on a separate front, a ruling by a federal judge ordering the production of Secret Service logs identifying visitors to the office of Vice President Cheney.

The five-page document dated May 17 declares that all entry and exit data on White House visitors belong to the White House as presidential records  rather than to the Secret Service as agency records. Therefore, the agreement states, the material is not subject to public disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act. 😱

In the past, Secret Service logs have revealed the comings and goings of various White House visitors, including Monica Lewinsky and Clinton campaign donor Denise Rich, the wife of fugitive financier Marc Rich, who received a pardon in the closing hours of the Clinton administration. :mf_boff:

Here is one odd thing about it:

Dems, including the Madam Speaker, have touted the minimum wage as "simply a matter of doing what's right, just and fair."

Perhaps the Madam Speaker was implicitly admitting what some conservative repubs have been saying all along: that a minimum wage increase will kill thousands of jobs. Thus, she may be giving her hometown business some slack by not forcing it to pay its workers in Samoa the additional wages, thereby, allowing the company, and parent company, to save some green and perhaps save employees' jobs. If this scenario were true, she would seemingly be giving up on the stance followed by most of her democrat colleagues: That increasing the MW will not create additional job loss.

Perhaps the Madam Speaker is just granting a huge favor to a big-business in her neck of the woods. If this scenario were true, she would be falling from her stance as the 'consumer's protector' or the 'average Joe's politician'.

Or maybe she just doesn't like Samoan residents very much.

It would seem that you did not read the link you provided in its entirety. From what I can see, previous MW bills did not extend to us territories and possessions. It would also appear that American Samoa did not have MW protection, so nothing has changed.

It is business as usually on Capitol Hill. What else is new.

“If the government coercively raises the price of some good (such as labor) above its market value, the demand for that good will fall, and some of the supply will become ‘disemployed,'" according to a study by the libertarian group. "Unfortunately, in the case of minimum wages, the disemployed goods are human beings.â€￾

Don't get all worked up folks, we have a never ending supply of guest workers 🙄 who will gladly take those jobs for less than minimum wage.

If you do some backround searching on American Samoa you will find that legendary lobbyist Jack Abrahamoff's name popping up relating to past Dem attempts and losses at raising the minimum wage subverted by Rep's and that large Tuna company HQ'd in SFO in big Nance's district. SO then you ask,why is this same scenario rearing its ugly head under a bill in our newly installed "we're going to do things on the up and up not like those corrupt Republicans we drove outa office" Dem controlled government?
Just like the guy on the urban street corner selling crack who was murdered last night and another takes his place today,it seems our squeaky clean Madamn Speaker has fallen prey to another Tuna toting lobbyist. If not,why would American Samoa once again be excluded from a wage raise just like those nasty Repub's used to do?

Is'nt great?

American Nationals of Samoa are exempt, but if amnesty is granted for Illegals they now have full entitlement.

Rome is burning folks!
