Poison Found in Pet Food
Mar, 23 2007 - 11:40 AM

TORONTO AM 640 TORONTO - U.S. authorities may have found the source of the problem in the Menu Foods pet food recall. They have found evidence of rodent poison in the food after samples were tested earlier this week. A food lab in New York says a chemical used to kill rodents that was in wheat imported from China is the apparent culprit.
Tainted food from the Streetsville-based company has been linked with the deaths of more than a dozen animals in the U.S and Canada and yesterday lawyers in Toronto filed a class action suit on behalf of one woman who's cat has died.

Think about it when you eat a sandwich.
Where do the ingredients come from and what are 'their' standards?

Also noticed how the US media has not jumped on this.
Thoughts?

I guess my ‘point’ (or inference) was not clear.
In this ‘globalization’ endeavor there will be casualties due to the differences in international policies/poli’ticks’ and national ‘sovereign rights’. The Canadian company (not to pick on Canada, this is an international endemic issue) warehouses foodstuffs collected from various international sources that do not have to adhere to the FDA (yes, I know pet food is not FDA regulated) guidelines of the USA. Then distribute their products to USA companies that collect different products internationally, combines them in the USA and slaps a ‘Made In USA’ sticker on them, because that is where the ‘final’ product was produced and distributed from.

As our ‘globalization’ continues, what is our comfort zone that the governmental regulatory powers will protect us from consumption of products outside of regulatory compliance that may eventually lead us into a premature and untimely death?

We already know that aircraft painting has been moved out of country for ‘cost savings’ mainly attributed to cheap labor and reduced HAZMAT compliance/liability/restrictions of the host country. How would you feel eating a fruit from the drainage ditch of their maintenance facility?

I’m very uneasy about it. I am also uneasy about the environmental impact that is happening. I was watching a night line a few weeks/months ago about salmon farming. Not sure if anyone knew that South America is the largest producer of Salmon in the world now. Salmon are not even native to that area. They grow them in huge pens in the South Atlantic (I think it’s Argentina IIRC). They waste that they produce in the pens is phenomenal. The piece seemed to indicate that the food the fish are fed is good quality but who knows if that is the truth or not.

I’m not sure what the answer is. Usually it takes a massive accident (food poisoning, contamination… etc before someone thinks that something needs to be done. We as a nation and the world we live in seem to be reactionary not pro-active.

It’s not an ‘accident’ if we are aware of it and it is preventable. If it’s not economically viable wherein the deaths and reduced health costs are acceptable to ‘the powers that BE’ then that is a whole different discussion.

But ‘WE’ pawns should be cognitive of it and look at future ramifications of our represented poli’tick’ intervention/regulation.

From one A$$ to another,

I think there are a whole lot of things that we (someone) is aware of. The first that comes to mind is the Ford Pinto. There were memos discovered that showed Ford knew the Pinto was a death trap. The decision was made based on money. They banked on the fact that any law suits filed would be cheaper to settle than the cost of the fix. I do not recall if their calculations ended up being correct or not.

Government, corporations and the people to a degree make decisions based on our wallet or in government’s case, how much risk it can make for their future. Well being and foresight does not seem to enter into the equation. A politician is only going to stick his/her neck out if there is something in it for them or if they get caught (Think VA Admin.). Corps are in it for the money. If will cost them more money to fix it than not, screw it. If they can make money of the fix ….."look how good we are". Consumers, if we can save a buck .. screw the next guy … The pollution might affect my kids? Show me proof or F off. Never mind that the ‘proof’ "might" be wrong. It’s going to cost me how much more? Nah, let someone else pay for (insert what ever you want here).

I try and shop my conscious where possible. I won’t shop at Wal Mart because I hate their labor practices. I try and buy stuff made here when possible if it is of a quality that I am comfortable with. Now I have a dilemma with that, do I buy a Chrysler made in MX or a Honda made in Georgia?

I don’t think most people want to know. Ignorance is bliss. Change might require effort or sacrifice on their part and most are not willing to do that. They would rather someone else deal it and leave them alone.

Then again, I am a cynic and an a$$ so what do I know.

Politicians voting their conscience? OH .. wait... that was some more of that sarcasim right.

There you go again, making a post which has absolutely nothing to contribute to the discussion.

Even the conservatives on this board think you are full of hot air.
I know it is difficult but next time you post something, see if you can actually post something which contributes to the argument.

This discussion is about out sourcing and its possible health effects. It is about whether or not the people as a whole will do anything about it. The argument is not about ME.

I guess if you just have the need to see your name in print that's fine but it getting quite old.
