Pilot Sully Sullenberger: Superman and everyman

The story is always about the hero. In the media, they try to define only one "hero" even though there may be many others who were also heroes. From a story telling perspective, it simplifies and clarifies the subject. All of the crew are also heroes. Sully would be the first to admit it. The media has Sully as the spokesperson for all of them and that is that. His book is out today, and I hope it will give praise to all of the crew.

I personally will not buy the book. One event does not make him a hero in my world but God he alone has been a nirvana to put a kick in our step. How sad is that was he ever involved in the Union a group of USPA highest paid captains that do not pay dues.......................I think that as you look at your life if I win the Nobel Peace prize its for many good deeds. We can not forget all the other pilots that got swept under the bus............................................................

Huh?

I second that "Huh?".

I saw the new commercial that Captain Sully is in for St. Jude's Children's hospital. I've met one of the founders of that hospital, Mr. Richard Shadyac and I'm impressed that Captain Sully would use his notoriety for a worthy cause. Mr. Shadyac who very recently passed away, started this hospital with Danny Thomas with their own funds to provide care for these children. Kudos to Captain Sully for getting involved with St. Judes.

Does One Event make him a hero if you were a passenger on Flt#1549 On Jan 15,2009. Why dont you ask the 150 ppl he saved that day if one event makes him a hero. Shut It....Put your foot in your mouth.

Me thinks you are not clear on Sully's message going forward.

He is NOT espousing his skill and leadership. Rather, he has decided to use his celebrity to bring light to the erosion of our jobs, including the pay scales and work rules which we grudgingly work under. He states that if we continue on the present path, we will not attract the best and the brightest to the aviation industry. I am not the best and certainly not the brightest but he has managed to construct a salient point that cannot be shrugged off.

On a humorous note, I haven't decided whether I will buy the book yet. Being a pilot, it is a great inner conflict which is pondered in the epicenter of the primitive brain ; to buy the book or borrow it.

Sully could just retire and live out the rest of his days quietly but he has chosen to help all of us possibly recover some of what once made this job not a job at all.

If being a lifelong professional who'd found his passion at a young age and who's worked hard in obtaining his education, serving his country, raising a family, honoring his duties, supporting his union, and maintaining his insistence in humility, fairness, integrity; if this to you does not sound like a hero, we may only assume you're talking about a sandwich.

1549 didn't make Sully a hero, Sully'd already been one to a lot of people for a long time. The River landing just put the spotlight on one true hero that had happened to pull off a pretty amazing thing: this was bright spot for a lot of people, especially at a time with two stagnating wars, the economy in freefall and a one of the most ideologically-charged changing of power in D.C. days away.

After the fact, Sully remains so prominent because he's refused to compromise his principles in the face of fame and adoration and now uses his time and renown to help others and live up to his responsibilities. He's not preachy, he's pragmatic, sincere, successful and remindful of the professionalism and contributions of the whole crew.

Nihilistic and aloof as I may sometimes be, I have no problems saying that Sully is a true American Hero.

🙄

Edit: I'd buy it.
