The pilot of a small plane with engine problems avoided hitting a greenhouse on Farm Road as he made a safe emergency landing Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

"He made a very good landing in the field,"Pequannock Police Chief Brian Spring said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said the plane, a 1962 Piper PA28, left Lincoln Park Airport at about 4 p.m. Tuesday and climbed to about 800 feet when the pilot reported engine problems.

The pilot turned back toward the airport but instead had to land about 1.25 miles away on Farm Road.

Surprised witness

Joe Vanvugt of Farm Road was getting mail from his mailbox when a shadow made him look up into the sky.

"I saw him coming down slowly," said Vanvugt. "I thought he was going to land into the greenhouses but he landed behind them."

Authorities said the pilot landed the plane on a graveled part of the property of the Van Wingerden Greenhouse on Farm Road.
