PIT-CDG on DAL?

I wish you all the best with it, and the RDU-CDG was mentioned because it is along the same lines as PIT. Let's face it, EVERY AIRLINE has experimented with new markets over the years, and EVERY one has pulled the plug from time to time. I recall when DL went on a rampage to crush PI with competing service in several of their key markets such as EWR-GSO/RDU. Those flights came and went within the first year, so it can happen even to DL. New markets and flights come and go, so only time will tell if this one survives or not.
It just doesnt' seem to make sense offering this service out of PIT given their past performance and support in this and other INTL. markets.

I completely understand what you are implying, my idea is simply the city must be requesting this service for a particular need that is necessary. certainly not trying to debate your ideas, but then when you read something along the lines there is "zilch" or "meaningless" just seems well...not taking into consideration future possibilities for a city(because it all eventually changes regarding a demand for air service)..as far as wishing the best...I think all of us in this industry need that!

Now is the time for all of the PIT locals to stand up and support this service. If this fails, it likely is going to be the last time you will be able to travel nonstop across the ocean.

DL has tried dozens of new routes over the last two years. If they do not live up to expectations, they are usually pulled within a year or so of starting up. You have to give DL kudos for trying to make something outside of the DL core markets. Yes, I know that AF has a hub in Paris on the other end so it's technically a hub and spoke type route.

That sums it up pretty well, and I didn't intend to get into it with you. I have more of an issue with the member who started the post, as he did so over on the US board before the Moderator moved it here. He tends to post his pro-DL propaganda along with any negative stuff he can scrounge up about other Airlines on THEIR boards. Nothing wrong with being proud of your company at all, but looking down at people who do the same job at another company is wrong. I have had freinds and family who worked at DL for years, and never had a deep dislike for the company at all. It is unfortunate that this fellow gives the DL people a bad name by badmouthing others while claiming to be a representitive of DL.

as mentioned my idea is community needs/requests not what airline does it better than another, or what airline can make something work than someone else, because that seems a little silly to me to even think one airline is better(or that mentality) than another especially today.

At least according to NW's route map, the "new" DL will have pretty good feed into PIT from cities from JAX to Madison WI, plus the AF hub on the European end. That might be enough to make money on a 757, while US couldn't on an A330 (and as I recall no European hub since the flight was pulled about the time US joined the *A).

Ah, but here's the rub: all of those flights are directs, not connections. I guess someone could choose to fly NW JAX/MEM/PIT/CDG, but why would they when they could fly DL JAX/ATL/CDG, or US JAX/PHL/CDG, for that matter?

As for the city's desire/request for international service, PIT has always felt they deserved more. The problem is they often get it, it isn't profitable, it goes away, and they trash you for making a business decision.

Good luck DL. You're going to need it...

Personally find it to be great news for the community! I wonder if there are any incentives to secure this new route or an ability to maintain this route at least for the immediate future by the city? its a shame when a city loses any amount of air service but wonderful news when it is restored! I wish for all involved only success!

The earlier post was my error - I assumed that any place that had direct service from PIT also had direct service to PIT. Turns out not to be the case.

Good to see you back here, BTW.

I believe the big difference between this service by Delta
and previous service offered by US is that Delta isn't operating
this flight alone. They have ATI/JV with Air France. Two airlines sharing
the cost of just one flight.

Shouldn't we also assume then that they are sharing the revenue on the one flight as well?

I wonder if they will use a NW or DL bird?

Judging by the seating configuration they give in the press release, it looks like they will be DL birds.

Anyone know what/if any subsidies were given by PIT or RDU?

I applaud DL for trying something outside the box, as now may the time to do it with oil back in the $60 range, but I think it will be an uphill battle. Neither have a large O&D market to CDG meaning that they will rely heavily on connections in CDG to make it work. In effect, for travelers headed to any major city other than CDG, it is hardly any more attractive than stopping in IAD, PHL, EWR, JFK, ATL, etc. Plus, AAs RDU-LHR is subsidized by a pharmaceutical company so they are fighting another uphill battle in that respect, something that will only get worse once the AA/BA ATI/JV is approved. Will be interesting to see -- if they are successful perhaps we'll see flights to CDG from places like BDL, CMH, or IND?

one 757 flight to an AirFrance hub more than likely will work especially if the city has made incentives available.

business travelers(in particular) do not necessarily want to do that...if they have a choice...probably why they are requesting this service, while this service more than likely will benefit the entire community(especially if there is no international service to Europe available) the focus maybe business travel made more convenient.

Haven't seen anything on the RDU flight, but the PIT subsidies could be as high as $9 million in the first two years depending on how much revenue the flight generates.

I... Just... cant stop..... Laughing..... This is classic mismanagement, trust - if PIT-CDG was a money maker, US would be doing it, or another airline, I am loving this....
