The routes are optimized for winds. They also combine navigation via Jet Routes (the high altitude system of airways) and some direct vor to vor routings. What the aircraft uses to navigate to the geographic position of a VOR is normally GPS. Some of our fleet uses Inertial Navigation that uses position updating from VOR's and DME's to determine the aircraft location, translate that to Lat/Longs and allow the aircraft to navigate to the coordinates of a VOR. There is very little, tune the VOR and Navigate, left in the airline flying.

If you have Unimatic access, type in:
RQ CTY CTY for the route of flight, or RQF CTY CTY for the actual navaid fixes for the same routes.

Depending on the time of day and weather situation, flights may get direct routings, for example from LAX to IAD on a redeye, they might get a direct from TNP to FAK, which out nav systems can do. Dispatch can tell the flight if the direct route saves time/fuel.
