I am not a pilot or an employee of Delta but I will give you my opinion. If you want to trvl book it. Just make sure you use a major credit card and call your CC company to see what would happen. You can always dispute the charges but I would call first. Also, when Independence Air went out many of the other airlines had procedures to help stranded pax. JMO

The whole reason DL filed for bankruptcy was because the credit companies demanded a billion dollars - the equivalent of one month of DL revenue - be held back. If you book with DL now, DL won't get the money for a month on average - and the cycle is continually repeating itself.

Yes, you are safe to book on DL - they are in bankruptcy because the credit card companies demanded the cash holdback for insurance against the possibility of a DL shutdown.

It also says, though, that the pilots are foolish if they think DL can sustain any more loss of revenue. If DL doesn't fly, the credit card companies will stop transferring money to them. No revenue coming in means the company will be quickly liquidated. And a new nastier verse of the rap posted on this forum will be added.

And although the pilots say they stand on principles, not one union group in the US has yet to stand up to management simply because the pilots have bills to pay just like everyone else. They'll cave and they're fools to continue to harass the company that still has the ability to make their pilots' lives pretty miserable. The new DALPA leadership has been a complete diappointment - and they will pay dearly for their arrogance and stupidity - while the planes keep flying.

Well World,

just because you say so, does not make it so, I hope there will be an agreement. But if the pilots walk DAL WILL NOT FLY. If the company thinks that they can make the pilots life miserable, watch what happens to on time, write ups, cancellations, and fuel burn. Fly the contract, Fly the FARS, Making threats (ARROGANCE AND STUPIDITY) is not what is going to save DAL. If there is a strike vote look for the creditors and other interested parties to clean house IE trustee. With the prospect of a liquidation the stakes are high for everybody not just the pilots, so curb thy tounge, naive.
But I am sure the $14 million soft landing for the senior executives will. This game of brinkmanship no matter how it goes will poison the water for years. Good luck to all of the DAL employees.

I think the advice about booking with a credit card (NOT a check card) is dead on. If the pilots strike - a move that will shut down Delta permanently - then you will be able to get your money back.

I'd be shocked if the pilots went through with the strike. Calling this self defense is foolish. It's not self-defense when you commit suicide.

"Stand back or I'll kill myself!" - DALPA

They will not strike... If they did, AirTran would move into Peach Tree City and the State would then be required to give everyone Golf Carts.... a Tax Break !!!! Free Fuel !!!! and a way to buy Beer on Sunday!

As a few people have said book with a Credit Card NOT a debt card. The credit card companies will get your money back if there is a shut down.

WT,

Your very quick to "prognosticate" what DALPA will/will NOT do!

I suggest you look at DL closer, ESPECIALLY if they're successful in getting DALPA's (LEGAL) contract TRASHED !!

(I'm NOT suggesting that DL do the following)
But it IS possible for DL to "farm out" EVERY job,to save MORE money, with the exception of the Flt. crews, Dispatchers, and DL agents in ATL/JFK/CVG only.

I cannot "prove to you" this "feeling" that I have today, about the WHOLE DL situation.
But I will tell you that I "feel" DL is less willing NOW, to play "russian roulette" with DALPA, "IF" the contract is Invalidated !!!!!!!!

Its not a matter if they Strike and you buy your ticket. You will get a refund with the use of a CC. If you fly out and the pilots strike in the middle of your trip, you're screwed! If other airlines honor the DL ticket, you might be OK. But, remember if they honor it you will not be the only one. The other airlines passengers come first and then the DL passengers would be last. My advice to you...

BOOK AWAY!

Wait until April for you to travel? That's is funny. The pilots are not concerned with the passengers well being.

JUDGE TOSSES CONTRACT = STRIKE!

dscot12:

You are probably safe either way. As others have said, your credit card will ensure that you get money back and other carriers should honor your ticket.

However, the any potential strike timeline favors you.

For a strike to happen,

1. Negotiations between DALPA and management have to fail, AND

2. A three-person arbitration panel has to decide that the company can reject the contract and impose the cuts that managment is seeking, AND

3. DALPA has do decide to actually go through with the strike, AND

4. No judge acts to prevent a strike.

All of this will take a while, so your flight on the 24th should be fine.

As for BOB's opinion, he is an inaccurate source of information but a good source of entertaining rhetoric.

My advice to you...

BOOK AWAY!

NHBB,
DL has had the opportunity to get rid of all of DL's employees except for the pilots 'cause they aren't protected by a union. But they haven't which perhaps says that they will be competitive but they aren't vindictive to their employees. Their unions, on the other hand, might be an entirely different matter. The further ALPA pushes, the greater the retribution. Have you considered the possibility that DL might bust its pilots to poverty wages but keep the rest of its employees at competitive wages just to prove the point about what a union will get?

That would be suicide for managment to do. The pilots would find another form of employment and quit or really strike. The only reason management has not eleiminated the other employees is because they need them to help run the airline, whey else would they employ them?

World, you use to be so rational, anything other than a consensual agreement will result in the liqidation of DAL. Everyone knows it with the exception of you and some of DAL's senior management, I believe that will not be allowed to happen, if real progress is not made soon, the court will at the request of creditors, ALPA, etc will appoint a trustee, Frankly I think this is the only scenereo that will save DAL from liquidation, there is a total lack of credability on both sides, but the court and others will support a trustee appointment because this management has failed. Bottom line is you cannot operate the airline without pilot cooperation. DAL pilots walk= DAL liquidation.

your right, captain. But agreements don't mean both parties really want what they agree to but they know that what they have to do is really minimize losses. Face it, the airline unions had their heyday in the 90s and it's now managements turn to get everything they can. The fact that there are thousands of airline employees on the street and ready to come to work does little to strengthen labor's case. If labor was as powerful as it said it is, then why have so many carriers been able to gut their employee costs during the past few years? Face it - labor has no strength and the DL pilots will cave like just like the dozens of other airline labor groups that have caved in the past five years.
