Northwest Declares Chapter 11 and--Surprise!--Everything is "Normal"

So Northwest Airlines Corporation, Northwest Airlines' parent company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after the market closed today.

You'll be happy to know that the airline said that operations were "normal." Of course, I can't tell whether that's the pre-mechanics strike normal, the first days of the strike normal or the mediocre, mid-strike normal.

And as this daily update ends, please raise your hands if you think the strike had nothing to do with the bankruptcy filing. Remember, everything is normal.

My hands up, it was Oil prices atleast mostly I am sure the strike did not help.
but had the hurrican not hit and oil skyrocketed I still say they would not have filed and had the hurrican hit when AA was going through it's concession AA would have filed as well.
The same goes for continental as well, it's just bad timing. 🙁

Fuel prices are what's killing the Airlines not labor. B)

Actually it is neither labor nor fuel, Its sellinga product for less then it costs is what is killing the airlines. One or Two companies try to raise fares and other companies usually NW try and screw them and refuse to match the increases. If the price of hamburger meat went up do you not think McDonalds and Burger King would raise their prices as well? Why do airline management teams not understand this?

Raise fares, it's just that simple...

When the roundtrip fare often costs less then one night in a hotel these days, you have a pricing problem. When your weekly car rental exceeds your roundtrip airfare, you have a pricing problem. Gas stations had no problem gouging buyers when the hurricane hit depsite the fact there are hundreds of gas stations within a few square miles, including the LCG's(low cost gas stations) such as costco, walmart, quick trip.

It's about union-busting and nothing more. They want the contracts busted and will do whatever it takes, including costing Raptor $4,500. 😛

you are aware if you raise your ticky prices some other clown will go the other way...because they know you don't have the deep pocket allowance that you once held...its that simple....everyone including YOU did it to us at U and now what goes around comes around so please do not whine......

Airlines have to be willing to concede certain markets then until they can afford to compete. Of course this would probably mean more layoffs seeing as how there are too many planes still flying for today's economic environment. They can have all of the pricing power they want in markets that no LCC fly.

Try non-reving on one. If there were too many they wouldnt be full.

Sorry AMFAMAN I don't buy the Union bustiing thing as the reason they won't raise fares, I think there is a reason they won't raise fares but I am not really sure what it is maybe, the customers will not pay more., we all have to have gas we do not all have to take a plane ride, or maybe it is nothing more than competition southwest has a huge cost advantage maybe the Airlines are just trying to compete with them and each other, maybe they are trying to drive each other out of business, Wallmart does it all the time and gets away with it.

I don't know why they won't raise prices but I don't think it is just to screw their employee's or Unions, I know they are out to get us to some degree but that is just alittle to paranoid for me. 😉

GAS is over $3.00/gal and I see people still buying it. People will still fly if the fares are raised. There only so many seats in any given market, so even if a stupid airline refuses to raise fares with everybody else, that stupid airline still has only so many seats. People will still have to buy a higher priced ticket,if they want to fly. The airline industry was regulated for a reason and now we see why. What is happening now is proof that deregulation did nothing but destroy another American industry. When almost all of your nation's flag carrier's are/or have been in bankruptcy something is definitely wrong!

Princess, The airline industry was deregulated because the government subsidized them and the government was tired of it. The majors as you guys like to call them were sucking the government dry just like the unions are sucking the companies dry. So the government deregulated the industry telling the companies to sink or swim. Kind of like Northwest did to AMFA. It looks as if they are sinking.
