What Recession? The $170 Million Inauguration
Obama's Inauguration Has Been Financed Partially by Bailed-Out Wall Street Executives

The country is in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, which isn't stopping rich donors and the government from spending $170 million, or more, on the inauguration of Barack Obama .

The federal government estimates that it will spend roughly $49 million on the inaugural weekend. Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland have requested another $75 million from the federal government to help pay for their share of police, fire and medical services.

Maybe we can use some of the money we are saving from the oil revenues in Iraq? After all, Iraq is paying for their own rebuilding right? OH, how about we ask Halburton for some money. After all, they are making a killing at tax payer expense. They could probably pay for the inauguration with the money they used building shoddy accommodations THAT KILLED US SOLDIERS.. See, problem solved. There are tons of revenue sources. Just have to look for them.

Nope, Obama would rather use your tax money. I guess that what he means about the calls for sacrifice as inauguration party begins...

Inaugurations are always paid for by us. Everything the US government does is paid for by us or have you not figured that out already?

"The Annoited One" must be given the oppotunity to address his flock.................no matter what the cost !

Maybe you need to brush up...on the contrary inaugurations are mostly funded by donations. However the messiah feels compelled to ask us to sacrifice at the same time wanting tax payers to foot the bill for the big ego-stroke of the year.

And then there is the party bill.

We have a budget of roughly $45 million, maybe a little bit more," said Linda Douglas, spokeswoman for the inaugural committee. That's more than the $42.3 million in private funds spent by President Bush's committee in 2005, or the $33 million spent for Bill Clinton's first inaugural in 1993.

Its odd that Bush caught heat for the amount spent on his inauguration, yet for Obama, the sky is the limit.

The federal government spent $115 million dollars for the 2005 inauguration. Keep in mind, that $115 million price tag was separate from the money Bush backers bundled to put on the inauguration festivities. For that, they raised $42 million. So the bottom line for Bush's 2005 inauguration, including the cost of security? That's right, $157 million.

Not to be nitpicky, but when you factor in inflation (via The Inflation Calculator at the Dollar Times website), $157M in 2005 dollars would be $173M in 2008 dollars. So in other words, this inauguration will actually cost less than the last one, from a certain point of view.

Nice try, however Media Matters is hardly an unbiased source...

Self-described "progressive" media "monitor" which tracks content that "forwards a conservative agenda."
Creation of Democratic Party funders and operatives and former conservative writer David Brock

Established in May 2004, Media Matters for America is a "web-based, not-for-profit … progressive research and information center" seeking to "systematically monitor a cross-section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation." But in addition to "news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible," the organization's concept of "misinformation" includes anything that "forwards the conservative agenda." Thus political differences of opinion are often portrayed by Media Matters as lies or worse.

Prior to founding Media Matters, David Brock met with a number of leading Democratic Party figures, including Senator Hillary Clinton, former Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota, and former Vice President Al Gore. Today, more than a few of the organization's roughly 30 staff members are Democratic operatives. Among these are Media Matters' chief communications strategist Dennis Yedwab, who is also the Director of Strategic Resources at Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Brock's personal assistant, Mandy Vlasz, is a Democratic pollster and a veteran consultant to Democratic campaigns, including the 2000 Gore/Lieberman campaign. Katie Barge, the Director of Research at Media Matters, formerly presided over opposition research for Senator John Edwards' unsuccessful 2004 presidential campaign.

and...

NYTimes
Each of these moments might have slipped into the broadcast ether but for the efforts of Media Matters for America, the nonprofit, highly partisan research organization that was founded four years ago by David Brock, a formerly conservative author who has since gone liberal.

In modern times, inaugurations have been financed by a combination of public and private money. In 2005, Mr. Bush raised $42.3 million from about 15,000 donors for festivities; the federal government and the District of Columbia spent a combined $115.5 million, most of it for security, the swearing-in ceremony, cleanup and for a holiday for federal workers.

Still, only about 400,000 people attended in 2005, while officials expect at least two million this year.

42.3 + 115.5 = 157.8

The president and first lady Laura Bush, and Cheney and his wife, Lynne, planned appearances at three candlelight dinners to thank those who contributed $100,000 or more to underwrite much of the $40 million cost of the inaugural celebration, which is expected to become the most expensive in history. The $40 million does not include the cost of a web of security, including everything from 7,000 troops to volunteer police officers from far away, to some of the most sophisticated detection and protection equipment.

Um.... I'm confused. Is it the tax payer or donations? If its tax payers then OH well, it always happens, if its donations ... STFU and deal with it.

Stick with what you know (which obviously isnt much). Its disconcerning when people ask for taxpayer sacrifice yet over indulge themselves. Welcome to your "change".

You obviously have no clue what the election of Obama means to a great many people in this country. If they want to throw him a party that is their right to do so. The party is more for the people than for Obama.

When we elect a female to the office it will be another huge party as well.
