Relax Perimeter Rule at Ronald Reagan

This will just drive another stake in the heart of our beloved, taxpayer-funded, Northern Virginia white elephant, DULLES INTERNATIONAL. And, if the rule is relaxed, you will see at least AA and United start doing transcons from DCA immediately. The ladies at DFW ain't gonna be happy about this. This would mean at least 2 more of the DFW-based 767s currently doing LAX and MIA turns going to another base.

I believe the 767 is not allowed into DCA anymore after 9/11.

There are no pics of a 767 in DCA on Airliners.net

Tempe statement

Wonder if LGA will be next?

If both DCA and LGA opened up that could be a huge game changer for US.

FRANKIE
SAYS
RELAX
LOL, a guy I knew in high school got in trouble for showing up in a t-shirt that said “I DON’T GIVE A S##T WHAT FRANKIE SAYSâ€￾, just without the ##s.

Back OT, I see that Senator McCain was a co-sponsor of this bill. I wonder how much Tempe has done over the years to tick him off. From all accounts he has a pretty short fuse.

McCain and America West/US Airways management have been in bed together for years. I don't know what they say to McCain, or how much they scratch his back, but he continually tries to pass aviation legislation that benefits HP/US. Read this:

In 1999, Senator John McCain of Arizona introduced legislation to remove the 1250-mile perimeter restriction, infuriating local residents concerned about noise and traffic from increased service by larger, long-haul aircraft. McCain argued that the move would improve competition, while critics charged he was supporting the interests of Phoenix, Arizona-based America West Airlines (AWA). In the end the restriction was not lifted, but the FAA was permitted to add additional exemptions, which went not to AWA but to competitor Alaska Airlines. AWA would later gain additional exemptions for non-stop service to Phoenix in 2004.

McCain has played a major role at AWA going back many years.

I thought I read somewhere that he doesn't fly non-stop on HP/US because he didn't want people to think he pushed through legislation for his convenience. Could be wrong, but I seem to have that recollection

McCain is flying jetBlue these days.

I don't believe the 767 can fly or ever has flown into DCA. The biggest a/c that ever flew into DCA was the 757.

No one has operated a 767 into DCA , however US has the one terminal gate capable of accomodating it. It could operate but probably weight restricted. DCA and LGA hve similar length runways , but DCA has more obstruction restrictions. AA/DL/TW have all operated widebodies in/out of LGA from DC10/L1011 to 767-300. AA once diverted a DC-10 into DCA (2 or 3 years ago) and it left the next day near empty.
