Relax Perimeter Rule at Ronald Reagan

AA once diverted a DC-10 into DCA (2 or 3 years ago) and it left the next day near empty.

It would not have been a DC-10. I've been flying for AA since 2000, and the DC-10s had already been removed from the fleet then. The comment about the 767s was supposed to be a joke, people. However, if 75s can land there, then we would probably do a transcon with the 75 if possible.

It could have been an MD-11 , but I didn't work that night. I too would suspect that any transcon out of DCA will operate with a 757.

If it was a DC-10 or any variation including the MD-11, it was not flown in by AA. All versions of that airplane were gone from the fleet before I started in 2000. The 747 and DC-10/MD-11 were some of my favorite a/c to fly as a passenger. They were all gone from AA's fleet before my time.

Prior to 9/11, US flew 757s in and out of DCA. The old PIT base worked them all of the time. We used to have a redeye trip that went PIT/DCA/PIT/SFO-RON then SFO/PIT redeye the next night. Very nice trip. After 9/11 757s and anything larger were banned from DCA for security reasons. Would a full 757 be able to takeoff from DCA and go to the west coast? Doesn't DCA have short runwys? A319/320s might be able to do it though.

Relaxed perimeter at DCA would enhance LCC's merger or fragmentation possibilities.

After 9/11 FAA restricted ac size to 150 pax max. Like a 757 could do much more damage than a 737-400 or a 320. Secret Service wanted DCA closed permanently and of course Congress said no way. eventually all size restrictions were lifted , USeast has only had a few 757's come in/out since then , but west has had them back as soon as they could. We did see more 321's after restrictions were lifted though. Haven't seen any lately. There was a time when we had 3 or 4 757's per day prior to 9/11. Every once in awhile one enroute from SFO to PIT would have to divert due to weather and would proceed directly to DCA.

IIR, it was UA that had the -10 diversion. Cant remember when UA parked the last one in the desert, but think it is bit longer than that.

If both DCA and LGA opened up that could be a huge game changer for US.

Delta Airlines is about to undergo "comprehensive" changes (In other words, cutting flights, ETC.); Therefore, it could result in Delta Airlines spinning off some DCA assets that US Airways could bid for. Maybe. Maybe not.

It could be a huge game changer for US Airways, however, keep in mind who is in charge of US Airways...

From the article:
"If additional service were allowed, US Airways estimates that an additional 500,000 consumers would choose to fly to Reagan National annually from the three largest California cities alone".

Though not mentioned, San Jose (SJC) is the third largest California city. SFO has tons of service from IAD. SJC would do well from the US hubette.

LAX SAN SFO/SJC and maybe SNA? Somebody call Boeing and tell them to build more 757's

P.S. 3 pages and no insults or name calling, congrats everyone!

757s are allowed to fly into DCA. Almost all airlines fly them into DCA, including US. I believe LAS-DCA is currently operating with the 757.

Also, while we're on the topic, on two of my last three PHX-DCA flights operated by HP (West), the flight attendants seem to think the "30 minute rule" still exists. That rule was dropped about two years ago.
