UPDATE 2-Amtrak president blasts zero-funding proposal
UPDATE 1-More than 1.4 mln flights late in US last year
American Airlines reports traffic up in January

WASHINGTON, Feb 7 (Reuters) - The Bush administration has no plan for Amtrak other than bankruptcy, the national passenger railroad's president told employees on Monday after the White House proposed no operating subsidy in its 2006 budget.
The administration's proposal for no subsidies next year was "irresponsible and surprising," Amtrak President David Gunn told employees in an e-mail message.

"In a word, they have no plan for Amtrak other than bankruptcy," Gunn said.

AA was a successful airline under his leadership BECAUSE of his aggressive management style. The same tatics he used against labor he used against our competition. When he retired as CEO he left AA in good condition and Don Carty undone it all in a few short years.

Even though he was tough on labor, he knew how to make AA successful. When he reitred from AA, it had a net worth of over $7 billion. He supposedly asked where all the money went and stated that AA would have been able to survive a 2 year shutdown with the position he left it in. If he had delayed his retirement for a few more years, AA would be in a much better position than it is today.

It's simple. Crandall was/is a bussiness man. Carty was not. Crandall was not greedy. Carty was.

Other than Herb Kehler (sp) and maybe Bethune at CO, Crandall knew how to run an airline. Now all we have are accountants and lawyers who are rigging their golden parachutes. Where have all the leaders gone?

The unions can always smell a wimp.

Kehlleher, Bethune, and Crandall reeked with male testosterone.

With Robert Crandall's leadership of AA I had OVERTIME[1.5 & 2.0] MORE VACATION,MORE PAYED HOLIDAYS[It is disgraceful that the TWU gave up MEMORIAL DAY] more payed sicktime and FULL PAY for my sicktime. Robert Crandall was GREAT for Union employees! GREAT! [plus it was easier to non-rev]

I do not now have any of this under the Carty/Arpey regime.

Shortly after 9/11, Larry King had Crandall as a guest. They were talking about the airline crisis. King kept trying to get Crandall to speak about Carty. Crandall kept saying, "Don's doing a fine job, they have a lot to deal with now..blah, blah, blah". King continued asking what AA might have done to avoid it's post 9/11 problems through out the show. Crandall finally could hold back no more and said: "I never would've spent a billion dollars on a bankrupt airline." It was classic Crandall.

The twu is smelling something alright. They smell FEAR! FEAR because they know that they will be removed from representing AMTs at AA by the end of the year.

I have always had the impression that one of the reasons Crandall was the way he was at AA was because of his intense desire to be the absolute best at what he did. I remember him saying that his father told him to be the absolute best at whatever he did. Sure, he made a lot of money at AA, but I don't recall any "controversy" over his compensation; only his management style. It seems to me that he thrives on being in the competitive business environment. Even though he is retired from AA, he is still involved in other businesses, mainly his new POGO air taxi.

I believe the TWU would not want Crandall to return. I believe that they would be scared he would interfere with there dues collection machine.

I do recall very clearly Crandall stating at one of his president's conferences that "unions are a business".

He also stated he did not mind paying the mechanics, but he could not pay everyone in the TWU mechanic wages. The TWU's industrial union attitude has suspressed the ability of the mechanics to keep pace with inflation.
