Report: NWA enlists bankers to bid on Delta

At least one could make the argument that a DL/NW marriage makes sense. It makes far more sense than the proposed US deal.

luv2fly,

I'll be sure and report your findings to the Citigroup bankers. They will thank you for saving them from a tragic mistake.

Do that, and while you are at it let them know about the assinine post you just made.
What does Citigroup have to do with this? Are you trying to infer that Citigroup's finincial backing somehow implies the US/DL merge makes more sense? It means they want to make money. They don't give a rats a$$ who mergers.
A NW/DL merge has significantly less route overlap than the proposed DL/US merge. It would also provide both carriers with what the other is severely lacking.
Parker is simply trying to eliminate his main competitor on the east coast and yet he will try to convince the DOJ otherwise. He will fail. If you don't believe that, I challenge you to put your money where your mouth is.
If the DL/US is approved as suggested I will retire my screen name. The same goes for you?
Are you confident enough to accept my proposal??? The loser to make a full conciliatory statement on these boards.

What does Citigroup know about the airline industry? If this ridiculous idea were to go through and they find out they won't realize their monies, US Air will be wishing they didn't exist.

My guess is that DL employees might change their tune regarding wishing LCC folks would go away. Imagine how much fun there will be with Steeland in charge.

If the Delta folks would rather team up with NWA, the best of luck to you all. NWA has been a labor nightmare for as long as I can remember. Long before 9/11, and long before their BK filing too. I recall them being called "Cobra Airlines" by one of their own employees, because they could strike at any time.
Given their ongoing Mtc. strike issue, and the 70+ stations that they outsourced it will be a rough road for a long time. Their fleet isn't much to get excited about either, being that it is made up of a bunch of ancient
DC-9's and DC-10's. Granted that the US employee group have not been all that happy for the past few years, but they are not even close those at NWA.

What are you talking about? NW was a wonderful place to
work. Just ask the thousands of employees forced out or
who resigned prior to the mass slaughter.

GSEMAN,

You ask, "What does Citigroup know about the airline industry?"

Congratulations. Possibly the stupidest post in the history of cyberspace.

If it makes you feel better, let's pretend they happily committed to lending 8 billion dollars with no scrutiny of the business plan. Let's also pretend that their bankers don't understand the business as well as a guy who fixes baggage carts for a living.

Beam me up, Scotty!

The fact that Citibank is willing to lend 8 billion dollars might mean they have confidence that the business plan will enable them to be paid back, don't ya think?

I guess the fact that their bankers are actually privy to the plan means nothing to you. If they want to get some real valuable insights on this transaction they should be reading your posts on US Aviation, right?

Actually, all it means is that they're pretty confident that they'll be repaid (if they end up shelling out the money). That could be because they have confidence in the plan or it could mean that they'll have some pretty good collateral. No different than getting a mortgage on your house - the bank wants to know your income, etc, to see that you can make payments. But they also hold the title on your house, just to make sure they get their money back.

So Citibank is no different than the ATSB, GECAS, etc. They think the plan may fly, but they undoubtedly will have plenty of collateral to insure that they get their money back regardless.

Citigroups finincial backing means they think they will make money. Understand? Nobody here has alluded otherwise. It has absolutely nothing to do with believing a proposed DL/NW merger might prove to make more business sense.

What happened to Keep Delta My Delta? A merger of ANY kind would prove that the outspoken Delta ONLY backers are nothing more than hypocrites.

If you think your biggest nightmare was US Airways, may I introduce you to the pits of hell...aka Northwest Airlines. Good luck, suckas!!

The article is pure speculation.

"FT.com reports Friday that NWA (Pink Sheets: NWACQ - News) plans to enlist the help of Evercore, a New York-based boutique bank to look for "strategic alternatives" for the airline. In a court filing, Northwest refers to the possibility of an "M&A transaction" (merger or acquisition) as a possible result of the process, FT.com reports.

One could also interpret the article to mean that NW is looking at opportunities to be acquired, rather than acquiring another company.

You are correct. We should have made them say "Anyone but US."

Correct again. Out of all the majors, merging with US is idiotic when compared to other possible combinations.
