House Republicans have introduced a bill that would end the 40-hour work week, dismantling an important component of the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938 and hurting middle-class families across the country.

Sponsored by Rep. Martha Roby (AL), the dubiously-titled “Working Families Flexibility Act” (H.R. 1406) would remove the requirement that employers pay a cash premium for overtime work and instead allow them to offer employees compensatory time off. The effect would be an FLSA that is undermined of its only incentive against excessive hours and a cheaper way for employers to demand mandatory overtime.

Whats to worry?

You been scooped by the Progressives.

Obamacare is turning the 40 hour work week into a 32 or less hours event......

Yea 700UW,
That would go-over..like a 'FART-in-CHURCH'....with the Rail Roads, and the West Coast Longshoremen, just to name a few !

Odds are, .....if DL goes to 'this',.................you WOULDN'T....hear-a-peep..out of ...'southwind, .....because in his world,.....The 'MAN' / boss..is ALWAYS Right !

And of ALL the States to choose from,.....ALL 50,....take a look at WHERE this DOG-SHITTT was proposed from !!

Wrong there Dell...if an employer doesn't have to pay overtime, he'll cut jobs, force fewer to work longer and earn less and recoup the costs of "Obamacare". Bears has it right...this bill comes from a "right to work your ass off" state.

Ah...south, don't look now, but most Europeans not only have quality health care provided by their *gasp* government, but they also get two month vacations AND don't work 80 hours a week. Doubt me? Head down to Disney World some weekend to and talk to a European "on holiday".

If that bill gets passed, I predict you will see a resurgence in unionism as people...even those who never belonged to a union in their lives...suddenly comes to realize how unions played a role in the life they lead.

Ah, the quality is in the eyes of your libtard propaganda. Since doctors milk the government, expect to get tests you don't need and may hurt you in the long run. Expect long hospital stays for minor tests. Expect to wait in a butcher shop type emergency room. The two month vacations are usually for the ones who employ you. Yeah, I lived there and experienced it. Your Disney world Europeans more than likely hate Americans and want you to feed into their lies. Yes, I am a European, and they truly believe that all Americans are stupid. Otherwise why would you believe someone telling you about gold in them thar hills, when those who have been and lived there didn't find gold? 😛

Ha! This is already happening in local government and I assume is heading that way. My union, AFSME, allows blue collars to choose either the money or work 8 hours and get 12 hours for compensatory time. I choose the money because I see a big flaw in the bottom line, but most co-workers welcome it because they've used all time off by Jan 31! The white collars, CSEA, who work OT can only get compensatory time. They are allowed to accumulate one month we are only allowed a week. So cheer up, America, because I am already there!

Lost me on the goodness of that post signals. When your company starts pulling comp time, demanding 50 or 60 hour weeks with no "Overtime" since that is "inflexible" to many employers, You see...with laws like this "your union" won't have a say in things. "Compensentory time" will be replaced with "if you won't work it, someone else will". Which I understand is the conservative dream, but in time, many will come to find that it sucks.

Get rid of those pesky 40 hour work weeks.

Bring back child labor, kill the minimum wage and we can compete with overseas manufactures.

Hell, maybe we can make Nike's!

Get rid of OSHA and we can lock workers in the work place so they are 100% productive.

Go Merika!

You ever hear the saying " You can't have your cake and eat it too"?
First , you envy the European 20 hr work week, then turn around and condemn a politician for suggesting a shorter work week for Americans..............make up your mind !

Oh, and as for as government insurance, I wonder how long that will last, with those governments teetering on bankruptcy !

Maybe the Evil Rich, over there aren't paying their "Fair Share"!

I'm sorry, I guess I read that to read taht employers could elminate overtime pay. Must have missed the part where they were eliminating overtime - period.

I think their goal is to eliminate overtime pay, not add forced hours to your work week. I believe the original discussion was if anything they want to even cut the 40 hours or something 🙄 They want to increase productivity and cutting cost by cutting overtime pay. If they give you comp time, they see it as you actually increasing productivity. I have an option, and unlike other industries, I cannot be forced to work overtime...which I assume you refer to. Bottom line: where I'm at they cannot cut my hours or force me to work overtime.

I can't see the problem with employers eliminating the OT???? I don't live paycheck to paycheck, and overtime is gravy to me. If they wanted to give me only comp instead, I may or may not take it.

Okay signals, I'll bite. we get rid of overtime pay. Are you more inclined to hire extra workers to keep people from working overtime, or would you be more inclined to a "mandatory 50" hour work week - knowing that you only need to pay the base rate.

NOt sure how many hourly workers would be willing to bite on "comp time". Sounds great, but a day off didn't let someone help pay down their mortgage like overtime pay does.
