Where will the seven exiting 737s come from, the east or west base?

A little of both. According to the Fleet Outlook Report, the next 737 to leave the west fleet is tail number 312 in September. The east fleet will see aircraft 522, 525, 503 retire in August and 515 in September. East aircraft 592 goes to the golden terminal in the sky in October, and 501 and 502 (also east) follow suit in November.

Well look on the bright side...the East pilots didn't really lose out on ALL the attrition!

why the hell would they paint a plane in the new colors if it's leaving the fleet in sep ?

Gotta burn some cash somewhere.

FAA Mandatory AD (Airworthiness Directive) for fuselage scribe inspeciton (All B737s) requires striping of the paint down to the bare metal. Part of the inspection repaints the aircraft to the new livery.

So..the 190s are growth airframes, not replacements?

This is an important and necessary part of controlling labor costs in the East. The very senior and costly Eastern pilots can not be counterbalanced with less expensive new hires. Longer term, the new Seniority Arbitration Award many encourage a faster retirement rate.

USAirways remains committed to being a profitable Low Cast Carrier.

In 2008 US Airways will begin receiving 37 A320 family aircraft, which are replacement aircraft for the B737s.

East Coast flying has a much higher yeild than West Coast hub flying out of PHX/LAS. In fact, Doug Parker indicated the reason AWA had to have very low labor costs because the company was a low RASM airline.

Definately a given that RASM is higher in the East. However, the yeild can be improved further when the costs, including labor, are reduced. Another way of reducing labor cost is to transfer some of the flying to the west. Current transition agreements limit this, but continued seperation of contracts may give an opening to achieve this. It should be an interesting year.

Striped down to the bare metal? I guess they forgot to do that for the West planes, because they painted right over everything; even the buses and 57's.
