NEW YORK, Dec 21 (Reuters) - AMR Corp (AMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Friday it expects overall fourth-quarter passenger unit revenue at its American Airlines unit to increase only modestly, sending its shares down more than 2 percent.
American Airlines, the world's biggest carrier by traffic, is expected to post passenger unit revenue growth between 3.6 percent and 4.6 percent over the year-earlier quarter, AMR said in a regulatory filing. Passenger unit revenue -- the standard measure of airlines' top line performance -- has been rising recently across the industry, but the upturn is threatened by rising oil prices and some wilting of consumer confidence.
AMR's forecast is lower than rival UAL Corp (UAUA.O: Quote, Profile, Research), whose United Airlines unit said earlier this week it expects unit revenue to increase between 11 percent and 12 percent in the fourth quarter.
AMR also said cargo and other revenue is expected to be about flat compared with the fourth quarter of 2006.
Its shares fell 35 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $15.02 on the New York Stock Exchange.
