Rolls-Royce wins US Airways engine deal

This is very good news. However just an FYI, we are picking up two A330-200's from Swiss MSNs 275 and 366 that are PW 4168 Series powered.

The PW series on the A330 and similar on the former MDC MD11 was weak, I'll take Rolls-Royce over P&W any day.
 
i am wondering if they made a mistake on this. i am thinking these engines are for the a350. i might be wrong on this.
 
Rolls-Royce announced today that US Airways has chosen Trent 700 engines to power up to 30 Airbus A330-200 twinjets. The value of the new business is approximately $2 billion and includes two long-term TotalCare® services agreements for the Trent 700 and RB211 engine fleets. The A330 order comprises engines for 15 firm and up to 15 additional aircraft.

This is the latest in a series of engine orders placed by US Airways since mid-2007. In June the airline announced firm orders for 22 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft powered by Trent XWB engines with a value of approximately $1.8 billion, including a TotalCare agreement.

In December, the airline selected the V2500 engine to power up to 153 Airbus A320 family aircraft. Rolls-Royce is a leading shareholder of International Aero Engines, the manufacturer of V2500 engines, and its share of the V2500 order is approximately $400 million.

Mark King, President, Civil Aerospace at Rolls-Royce, said: “This decision further establishes Rolls-Royce as a true engine partner with US Airways. Trent engines will power future widebody aircraft at US Airways, providing the best performance and value generation for their international route expansion. This Trent 700 order demonstrates their ongoing confidence in our products and our relationship.â€￾

The Trent 700 delivers outstanding levels of performance and the highest available thrust on the A330, resulting in increased operational flexibility. Latest technologies fed into the engine as a performance improvement package have delivered better fuel burn, which translates into lower emissions.

The airline currently operates a fleet of 43 Boeing 757s equipped with RB211-535 engines and 94 A320 family aircraft powered by V2500 engines.

US Airways is the 52nd customer or operator to select the Trent 700 for the A330 and will take delivery of its first Trent-powered A330 in 2009.

This order is contingent upon execution of definitive agreements, which are expected in the coming months.
 
Yep I think it is a mistake as US does not have 30 A330s on order.

Nope, as the story indicates, 15 firm 330-200 orders plus 15 options.

I don't have much confidence that the A350 will ever happen.
 
USAirways Accepts First Pratt-Powered A330

Toulouse, France, March 21, 2000—Airbus Industrie and Pratt & Whitney today presented USAirways with its first A330 passenger jet, making the airline the first in the United States to operate the twin-aisle aircraft.

USAirways selected PW4168 engines to power the ten A330-300s it has on firm order. Long-term plans call for USAirways to take up to 30 A330s.

The MD11:

The MD-11 was launched on Dec. 30, 1986. Assembly of the first unit began March 9, 1988. First flight was on Jan. 10, 1990. Certification occurred Nov. 8, 1990, with first delivery on Dec. 7. For comparison, the MD-11 is 200 feet 10 inches (61.2 m) long, or 18.6 feet (5.66 m) longer than the earlier DC-10 trijet, and carries about 50 more passengers.

Three engines -- General Electric CF6-80C2, Pratt & Whitney 4460, and Pratt & Whitney 4462 -- are offered to power the MD-11, providing maximum efficiency in their thrust class.

The PW 4168 was introduced in 1994, doubt it is the same engine that was on the MD11 and it was never offered on the MD11.

More than 160 PW4168 engines have been delivered since the A330/PW4168 went into service in December 1994.

I'm not going to argue over a 4460, 4462 or 4168 its still the same 4000 series engine, its a "Dog", Rolls-Royce is more reliable.

Why throw in another engine type if the current 330's have PW? I just don't see what the benefits are keeping two different engines in stock for the same aircraft. Its bad enough that the A320 series are different, but that was a choice that couldn't be helped. If they are going to do this, why not re-engine the A330's in stock now? How long would it take to do that?

Since when? The Agreement as of 1/31/2008 was for 15 firm (with 333 and 340 substitute options) and 10 undefined delivery date Options (the original order) - that's a total of 25 from Airbus. It does not include the 2 to be leased from Swiss in late 2008 or early 2009, via ILFC. I'm not saying you are incorrect, but where are the additional 5 you claim specified - i.e., in which Order documents?
