a pilot told me (I know) that even though we have switched from SABRE to SHARES for everything else that we still use SABRE for weight and balance. THAT switchover will take place on May 15th. If that is true look out!!
anyone know if this is correct?

I don't know if it's true but last month (March) we sat on the taxiway a lot waiting for the weight & balance figures to be reconciled prior to taking off.

I have heard that the ops side transfer has been pushed back , but it is a switch TO Sabre as the HP ops side is not able to handle the east side ops. I guess there really isn't much shares is capable of doing except screwing things up.

That happened to us on Monday at DCA, pulled off after pushback and waited to complete weight and balance.

What are you saying the sabre doesn't work??? Or are you talking about stuff you have no idea about??

May 15th would be a nice goal. However, in the other thread about ops using Sabre the best answer on when that switchover will happen is:

???????

Initially it was going to take place on April 19th. Then May 1st. Then May 15th. Now I'm hearing June, September, and October.

I'm not quite certain that we're switching to SABRE because of the RES migration if thats what you're implying...it's just that the SABRE method of doing W&B works better (with some minor flaws, but hey, who's perfect?). Note that I said the SABRE **METHOD** not the US Airways method.

The reason planes sit on the taxiway waiting for their W&B to be reconciled is an operational mistake. Either passenger services hasn't closed out their final passenger count or the ramp hasn't closed out their cargo loads in SABRE. Once these two sides are both finalized, the computer in Central Load Planning in PIT automatically sends the flight deck their final trim numbers.

This is a big change for the HP side because HP flights get their trim numbers from the ramp lead prior to push.

In my opinion...the HP method may be old but it works. HP aircraft don't sit out next to the runway waiting for their final numbers because the gate agent got caught up in conversation and didn't finish closing the flight. The only departure delays that occur with the HP method is if the final trim count in the computer varies by +/- 10 pax. That's typically because the gate did not cancel off misconx. All that requires is a quick cabin breakdown by the INF and off they go.

Now that we're all switching to the US method, Central Load Planning in PIT will plan the weight & balance for every flight at every airport across the country. For some reason I see this turning into a disaster, as we have a lot of "outside the box thinkers" who screw up loads big time. One of them in PHX thinks he can do whatever he wants. His nickname is derived from a tropical fruit. Aside from that, I hope CLP likes to answer their phone...agents will be calling from everywhere asking questions about their loads and from what I understand there aren't very many CLP agents working on a given shift.

Maybe we need someone on the inside of CLP to post here?

If there are pilots sitting out there on the taxiways waiting for numbers then it is not a sabre issue. The problem may be the passenger service employees who are trying to imput 'passenger counts' from shares, and are having difficulties in doing this in a timely way. May be a result of training, dunno.

Nonetheless, I wouldn't be surprised if the entire weight and balance is pushed back to sometime later than July.

At any rate, doesn't the west metal have to have acars for this weight and balance crossover to happen? And if so, how long would it take to equip the planes?

regards,

All HP aircraft have had ACARS. Whether or not they're working 100% of the time...well... 🙄

Look you don't have to have a Masters degree is Computer Science to know that right now things IT aren't going well for US Airways.
And just why is that? Because you keep saying it's so?
From where I sit one of 2 things is happening.
Sit is the key word. Sit on your butt and make uneducated statements and conclusions about things you have no clue about. Stick to the copiers.
1. SHARES is an inherently flawed system that may well be outdated and cumbersome
Yet, it used to run the west as well as currently run CO. Yep, completely flawed. 😉
2. The QIK overlay produced in house is a monument to US Airways IT's continued incompetence

Qik is not an in house product.

Piney- get a clue.

Piney Bob;

I have to totally agree with you on both points. Shares is a pathetic system. Travis Christ admitted at cutover that we were actually stepping backwards, but his hope was that a new system would be developed. the only problem is that no one has even thought about that yet. We have traded in our Cadillac for a used Yugo with the hope that someday, someone will develop a super car. Everything they do to shares is just window dressing or pimp my ride.

Just go manual like the old days before computers, all will be happy, manual meaning no computer system at airport except ticket counter for check in. Overstaff ticket counter and at gates just start a standby list , herd them on and off you go. We are doing that already, maybe this way we can be more proffessional. Lets face it, it is an invisible pretend system that doesn't work, why use it?
