S&p - Us Airways Ratings Not Affected Q3 Loss

737nCH11:

Yes, it is. There is no question that a loss is disappointing news, but the cash position remains stable, the investment community is accumulating the security (albeit on low volume), and the loss is figured into the business plan.

As Jim Corridore wrote in the S&P opinion, "US Airways' results are expected to be somewhat worse than average among peer airlines in the third quarter."

The company does not anticipate reaching profitability until 2005 when many of the cost reduction and revenue programs take fruition.

Therefore, with a $42 million drop in cash and $20 million of that due to weather, I wouldn't lose to much sleep over the disappointing results.

Furthermore, the UCT, which could be announced in late 2003 or early 2004, should further help the company return to profitability.
