I know they''re doing their job...and sheesh...some of them are good at it, but how does a low timer manage to get past some of them? Any tips?

I too have had that problem....being a low time heli pilot I have had all sorts who wouldn''t let me through. I usually call the place in a professional sounding voice as if I had called a million times before and don''t give them any hints that I am a lowtimer...then when I get ahold of the chief pilot or president I explain my situation and ask for a few minuites of his time on some specific date. Usually you will get what you want but sometimes you will get nowhere.

Yeah pj that''s my gig too. Try to almost sound ''customer-like''. My dilemma pertains to 2 specific operators whom I have met CP and OM respectively; and both have asked me to keep in touch. Once in a while I did get through and although they had nothing for me at the time, I was asked to give another call in a couple weeks.

But now, I can''t even get through to them, and in one case, I may have missed an opportunity. Apparently they have hired all of their groundcrew for the year and are no longer taking calls. D''oh!

Soooo, I''m hoping to keep in touch with the other cp...just in case....you know.
If only I could get through.

Which companies are you looking for? I may be able to email the CP''s direct line.!

If I were in your shoes I would tell the secretary your name and who you would like to speak with...tell the secretary that the CP/Owner is expecting your phone call. I get a little touchy when secretaries start acting like they run the show...if someone tells you to call them call them. Heres another idea...you can decide if this is appropriate....but maybe you should call him at home. Afterall this is a cuthroat industry...and if it waits too long you can almost forget about landing a job....Sad but True

In most places of business the secretary is the backbone so perhaps showing her as much respect as you would show the CP or OM may get you connected. Ya never know, the secretary may be the owners wife, daughter, cousin, mistress.......

Hee hee hee.......for those that do not personally know Longranger, the reason for all his reasoning on this topic is that in order to get through his door you have to get past a gauntlet of women,

Ladyranger
The Short Rangers
and the famous Grannyranger.......and be carefull when she''s one the booze

A CP was told me to call him back next week, after about a dozen tries with no luck, I decided to try really early in the morning since they were early cargo guys. Apparently he forwarded his phone to the company president - he wasn''t too happy when I called him at 6:00am...

After I identified myself, I belive the conversation went something along the lines of "what the hell are you doing calling me at home... etc etc"

good luck!!

As a low time Heli Pilot myself I know the feeling, Wont' mention the company but I drove to Yellowknife NWT on my western road trip (looked so close on distance sign in High Level AB) just to have the secretary tell me to get lost, and not very politely I might add, even after I explained to her that I had driven there from Southern Ontario (please don't hold that against me) so could careless and actually said that! Anyway admitting defeat I left quickly and quietly to start heading south when I got the brite idea to call and make an apointment, which I got quite the smug distastfull remark of you know your appointment is at 3:00 when I showed up at 2:30, felt like saying well it's probally better I am a 1/2 hr early than 1/2 hr late, but I bit my tounge and sat in waiting room and looked through photo album. Got to meet CP no job though (didn't train at thier school, cause I am really sure that would of helped !!!)
