I was talking to a friend today. Apparently they were on an aircraft that almost had a close-call on-ground collision a few months back. How scary! I have to think what it must be like for the pilots though. That leads me to ask the pilots here.. have you ever been in a close-call? Ever have an in-flight emergency / having to make an emergency landing? I saw some dumba** videotape an in-flight emergency landing.. they had a videocamera out when the FAs were saying "Sit down, stay down, brace brace" .. were they not aware someone had a big video camera out recording?

Anyhow.. how do you cope in those situations, I know you have to be among the best to be able to stay calm.

One dark and stormy night we had all the coffee makers fail.

It was awful. You know the two things that make airplanes fly? Coffee and money. Not much money any more but still plenty of free coffee, that is unless you have the dreaded COFFEE MAKERS FAILED ECAM.

*ROFL* How'd you make it to your destination?

It was a cold January 1. Still groggy from the night before I crawled into a warm cargo bin and nestled up to some bags.

Damn engines firing up woke me. Pounded on the bin roof and the FAs alerted the Captain.

i got out and now work for the TSA. Guarding your life.

Do you remember the flight that got hit by lightening a few years ago? Express flight from ABE-PHL in a Dash-8. Local news was there and were taking comments from paxs. One idiot was angry because we didn't give him a meal voucher and free tkt for his inconvenience. Another was angry because the captain didn't make announcement to apologize.......

Wow. It's the captain's fault that planes get hit by lightning? Meal voucher for inconvenience? Laugh. I remember a TWA flight I was on.. Er we all boarded.. we were on the plane for about 5 minutes. We turned on AC/air and 3 minutes after that everyone made a mad dash for the exit! *laugh* Apparently water accumulated in the air system.. I don't know how they work, but from my understanding something filled up with water and started giving the pax on the right side showers!

That was the scariest (funniest) incident I've experienced ;D

Although, we came close to making an emergency landing on my USAirways business trip on a PHX-MCO trip.. a 20 year old woman fainted in the aisle.. they were considering an emergency landing at one time.

Oh, that video of the emergency landing can be viewed here

My scariest experience with the airline?

We were going to the hotel in NYC and our transport van bumped into the back of a cab. Both drivers got out and started screaming at each other in arabic and making all kinds of hand gestures. Then, abruptly, they both got back into their vehicles and drove off.
Scary!!! 😉

Were you on an MD-80? They are very susceptible to moisture condensing in the ceiling during the summertime. I hate working #2 on a S80 in the summer. (That's the f/a that sits on the jumpseat mounted on the aft emergency exit between the lavs. On takeoff you are guaranteed to get a shower from all the moisture leaking out of the ceiling at the aft-most point.

And, sometimes the passengers get it because it leaks out around the a/c and reading light unit.

Three hotel van accidents for me.

My favorite was when the van driver in ORF rear ended a guy at a stoplight. The little basket of candy went flying.

Right after impact, the van driver turns around in his seat and yells “Okay, you guys are my witnesses, right? You saw everything!â€￾

And, back to the topic on hand...

My sister was on a SWA flight from LAS-PHX about two years ago that was struck by lightning. She still can not say enough about the professionalism of the SWA flight attendants and the cockpit.

She said the sound was deafening when the lightning struck. The f/as immediately checked every passenger and the cabin to make sure everyone/everything was ok. My sister said she could tell from their eyes that they were just as scared as the passengers, but spoke very calmly to the passengers in asking them if they were ok.
When passengers asked what happened, the f/as would just say that they weren't sure. That they were waiting on word from the cockpit themselves.

As soon as the cockpit had determined that there was no damage that affected the a/c's ability to fly, the captain came on, told everyone what had apparently happened, reassured them that there was no real damage to the a/c and told them the plan to continue to PHX unless some problem cropped up.

The only disruption was when they got to PHX, they took the plane out of service to check it further. She was supposed to stay on the same plane for the next leg to BHM.

i was on a DASH-7 once from ORF to DCA and made an emergency landing in DCA after a fuel line split in the number 3 engine awhich was shut down then

Yep! TWA had a whole fleet of MD-80s. It was in October 2001 though.. so I'm not sure how it got moisture buildup. Could it happen when flying through temperature extremes? I was flying from St. Louis to Hartford at the time.

It had to do with how cold was the interior of the cabin when it arrrived at STL. If it was rather cold and it was at all warmer outside than inside, then condensation will form.

I understand. I just was surprised at the amount of water coming out.. it sprayed out.. rofl.

Thank God my flights are boring...knock on plastic. But I DO have a funny van ride. A few yrs ago our hotel van got caught in the middle of an anti-war demonstration in SFO. It was kind of scary but it turned funny as our captain left the van to see if there was any way to get us out of that mess. All I could think about was a vision in my head of the captain being rolled thru the crowd on their shoulders shouting "No justice, no peace" with a big joint in his mouth. "That's it, I'm a closet liberal. I LOVE these Berkley types."
