Shoes thrown at Bush on Iraq trip

Excerpts:
An Iraqi journalist was wrestled to the floor by security guards after he called Mr Bush "a dog" and threw his footwear, just missing the president.

'Size 10'
In the middle of the news conference with Mr Maliki, Iraqi television journalist Muntadar al-Zaidi stood up and shouted "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog," before hurling a shoe at Mr Bush which narrowly missed him.

Showing the soles of shoes to someone is a sign of contempt in Arab culture.

I am just wondering if he would have done the same thing to Saddam?

"Mr Shoes" in his attempt to strike Mr Bush has inadvertantly struck a blow for Freedom and Liberty throughout the world.

Fact of the matter is, ladies and gentlemen, the shoe throwing incident shows that the US and the world have succeeded in Iraq. Had this guy thrown his shoe at Saddam Hussein, he would have been shot five minutes later. This guy is still alive to be made a star by the media around the world. Long live freedom; long live democracy.
Indeed that's true. But....and this is just my opinion...it wasn't worth ONE American soldiers life so that a man could throw shoes at a world leader in Iraq and live to tell about it.

The other consideration is that with Al-Queda having to tie up most of its resources in Irag and Afghanistan the world is a safer place in general.

Not sure what you base that on but given that we have moved into the ME neighborhood which is their back yard and our attacking of Iraq has made recruitment for them quite a bit easier seems to me that it is a better scenario for them.

Before, they had to come to our playground, now they just have to step out their door and there we are.

To argue that Mr Shoe is a beacon of freedom in Iraq is laughable. Do you think he would have faired as well had he done so off camera and at the Iraqi parliament? Do you think he would have faired as well with out the presence of close to 100,000 US troops enforcing democracy through out the land? Democracy should be able to stand on it's own. I do not know what exist in Iraq at the moment, but something that requires 100,000 troops to support it does not strike me as a democracy. By the way, do you really believe democracy can start up in a few years in a culture that has been as opposite to democracy for 4,000 years? Really?

I would prefer doing what it takes to keep them off our playground. This has worked so far.

Yes it has worked .. but for whom? Have you been paying attention to the state of the nation over the last year or so? Nine trillion in debt (soon to be ten trillion with the bail outs), military is stretched to the breaking point, foreclosures highest since the depression, 401k's devastated, world standing .. who knows, just too mention a few issues.

Looks to me like they achieved more than what they were seeking.

BTW, does anyone know what kind of shoes were thrown. That could make a difference on how threatened the president was. From what I saw they looked like hush puppies. Also, did anyone else notice Bush's cat-like reflexes. I was impressed.

I believe it has worked for our country. We do have some major issues going on right now but don't you think that if we had some terror attacks things could be way worse?

Not sure. OBL arraigned an attack on NYC and got Afghanistan blown to smithereens. I doubt he even dreamt that we would go into Iraq. I am sure even OBL reads the history books and knows that if we are attacked that we will strike back. Why should he risk another attack? The damage has already been done. Far more than I am sure he even hoped for. I would guess he never thought the towers would fall. So right there that was a bonus for him. Then we go in to Iraq to the tune of nearly $1 trillion dollars and counting. Our economy is in shambles. Why should he or any other organization risk retaliation for a strike against the US when all they need to do is sit back and watch us implode?

They Yankees and Red Sox are in a bidding war over him. He pitched two fast "shoes" right into the strike zone. They were clocked at fifty miles per hour. Imagine what he can do with a hard ball.

Cos, your insight into the brain of OBL is amazing. How do you come to know so much about him? You write as if you know for sure what he is thinking. It just may be that OBL is smart and cunning and irrational. So trying to figure his thought processes may be impossible.

This coming from the person who is convinced our actions have coward OBL into submission. How do you know so much about OBL? You write as if you know for sure what he is thinking.

If figuring out OBL 'may' be impossible why are people trying to do it? You seem to assume that W's actions have worked against OBL. I merely suggest that others reasons may be at work. So has he been figured out or not? Pick a side and stick with it. I tend to believe that human nature is fairly consistent.

I merely suppled an alternate theory to your own. What you choses to do with it is up to you.

I was merely trying to point out that what you think and guess comes across in your posts that you think they are facts(in some cases). That's all.

I never said I know what he is thinking. I don't know if we cowered him into submission. I do know we have not had a major attack since 9-11. You can guess all you want for the reason for no attack, but they are just guesses for now.
