Plane Runs Off Cleveland Airport Runway

Published: 2/18/07, 5:06 PM EDT

CLEVELAND (AP) - A commuter plane carrying 74 people ran off the end of a runway after landing at the Cleveland airport Sunday, an airline spokeswoman said. No injuries were reported.

The flight, traveling from Atlanta to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, landed around 3 p.m., said Thonnia Lee, a spokeswoman for Delta Air Lines Inc.

The flight was operated by Shuttle America, a Delta connection carrier, she said. Lee said she did not know what caused the plane to leave the runway or how far it went off.

I am glad that everyone is safe.

Ditto. It happens to everyone eventually..

Can you believe the runway navigational device at the end of the runway was not working??

Veteran pilot Jonathan Regas, of Reno, Nev., said the runway itself may have been a problem. The shortened runway slopes down - starting about 29 feet higher than when it ends.

That pitch combined with the heavy snow and the nonfunctioning navigational guide made the landing difficult, said Regas, a 20-year commercial airline pilot and former flight instructor.

"It's a question that should be raised," Regas said.
