Skycaps sue US Airways over tips lost to curbside fee

You are correct USairways should be ashamed of themselves. They are also going to lose this case since the SkyCaps already have a precendent on their side.

There is already precident

"AMR Corp.'s American Airlines lost a similar case in the same court on April 7, when a federal jury awarded nine Massachusetts skycaps $350,000 the airline had collected after instituting a $2 curbside bag fee in 2005."

What's the likelihood this will be settled before it goes to a jury?

Wait until the IRS finds out how much they really make.

Well maybe they hold the tip because so many of them check people in after the 45 minute before departure rule and the passengers bag misses the flight. Makes sence to me. It happens an awful lot in PHX!!

So, you are presuming the skycaps cheat?

Perhaps you should be careful about projecting your own characteristics on others.......

Acually the skycaps in the AA suit testified on the stand that they have not proerply reported their tips for years.

The judge in the case told them before they made the statement that the transcripts would be turned over to the IRS.

Also the judge has not entered the jury verdict into the record still, which means the case is not over. The judge more than likely will overturn the jurys verdict because the actual letter of the law was not violated.

You should read the trasnscripts.....and yes a majority of tip employees do not report the full tips, just what is required to reach the min wage......one would know this if they ever worked in a tip based job.....so no one is projecting anything on anyone, yet making a statement based on facts.......duh...period

My personal opinion is that skycaps are pieces of.....!

I base this on the guy who skycaps and works with me at my job. The laziest person on the workforce. He loves skycapping part-time and makes hundreds in a few hours and doesn't mind flashing it!

Often my MISinformation comes out of this all knowing skycap's big mouth! Yes he works for US Airways or the private contractor, who knows who cares?! I can't prove it but, based on my co-worker, I bet they account for a majority of lost and misplaced luggage, because of the 'tip' factor!

Yes, I know, everybody else is the exception! 🙄

From the article:

The skycaps, who seek class-action status to sue as a group, claim their compensation fell below the U.S. minimum wage because customers thought the fee was a tip.

Excuse me, but if you are asking for a $2 fee, how can a customer confuse it for a tip? Since skycaps are not allowed to solicit or negotiate a fee or tip(I'm assuming this is a fact unless robbery is encouraged)then how can an imposed 'fee' be thought of as a tip?

If there is an imposed fee, I might cut the tip, but don't make me out to be as brainless as a skycap that profits on frivolous lawsuits!

Get rid of these useless curb robbers they make your airlines look worse than they are!

I find that sequence of events pretty hard to believe and it basically negates what you are saying as "properly reported" can mean many things.

Having owned a bar for a few years, I am aware of alternative procedures employed in running similar enterprises.
