US Airways sues over work on Phila. airport expansion

PHILADELPHIA (Inquirer) - US Airways is suing the architects of Philadelphia International Airport's A-West international terminal over material used on the building's roof. US Airways says in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia that the New York firm, Kohn Pederson Fox Associates P.C., used a "highly reflective material" on the roof. The glare of "high intensity sunlight," reflected toward the airport's entrance road and aircraft ramp areas, posed a safety risk to vehicles on the road and ramp and to airplanes on the ramp, the suit alleges. US Airways, which managed construction of the terminal, said it fixed the problem itself when Kohn Pederson would not and now wants to be reimbursed. The airline asked for a damage award of more than $1 million. Kohn Pederson did not respond to a request for comment.

Not sure if lawsuits were required but the Disney fine arts center in Los Angeles had to be modified because it was built with highly reflective surfaces that reflected enough life to heat up houses across the street.

Architects might think twice about glitzy surfaces.
