Slashing Airbus A320's

Last week's news. This is already being discussed in another thread. Also, your headline is slightly mistaken. It's not selling "at least" five A320s. B6 says it will sell at least two A320s and as many as five - depending on the market. FYI, at the same time, B6 will continue taking in new A320s, as scheduled, for the rest of this year and much of next year.

Twelve A320s scheduled for delivery in 2007-09 will be deferred to 2011-12.

As I understand it, those start in the second half of next year. Airbus generally doesn't let airlines defer deliveries that are scheduled within 12 months.

Welcome to the high cost of fuel JB.

IMHO: I think the mistake JB made was adding a second fleet type.

Nor'Esta (btw, like your handle),

I believe their big mistake was overexpansion.

Their smaller E190 can get them what we're all looking for, higher yields.

Think US Airways and small cities and 100-seaters...DC9, F100 etc....Lots of $$$ in them tar hills...

Do we know what cities are going to see reduced service/seats? just wondering..........

They've announced a reduction on a couple of transcon routes and some of the EWR flying, I believe. Don't look for much of a pullback though as B6 is still receiving new aircraft.

I don't find it wrong to take planes out of one place not makeing the right money and fly some where else. All I've heard of reducing in EWR. Well they did pull back EWR-TPA, but guess what route its flying, EWR-SJU. They just started a 2nd round trip to SJU at the same time that the EWR-TPA flight used to run. So really they didn't reduce or pulled out, just shifted flying. Also B6 started flying MCO-SJU twice daily as well as MCO-BQN. All done on A320.

For those not familiar:
BQN=Aguadilla, Puerto Rico

I agree that their biggest mistake was rapid expansion. It's hard to keep a firm handle on service quality when this happens because you are taking on so many new employees so quickly. Combine that with the rapid increase in the price of jet fuel and you have a recipe for disaster. I think JetBlue would have been helped by establishing a Mid-West base of operations a couple of years ago. This would have dovetailed nicely with the operations at JFK, IAD and Long Beach, and given them many new route opportunities into under-served and heavily populated areas of the MidWest. But they continued to pour capacity into Florida and Transcons, both of which are over-served, as well as adding the second fleet type.

But you have to also think big picture. No matter what strategy they employed, with Jet A this high, it was going to affect EVERYONE in a very negative way. You can only hedge for so long when the prices keep going nowhere but up.

How many A320s is B6 going to get in 2007-09

From the 1Q06 report:

"Including an April 2006 amendment to our Airbus A320 purchase agreement, which deferred the delivery of 12 aircraft from 2007 through 2009 to 2011 and 2012, as of March 31, 2006 we had on order 95 Airbus A320 aircraft and 90 EMBRAER 190 aircraft with options to acquire 50 additional Airbus A320 aircraft and 100 additional EMBRAER 190 aircraft which are scheduled for delivery through 2016 (on a relatively even basis during each year) as follows:"

Year / Firm A320 / Firm E190 / Option A320 / Option E190
Remainder of 2006 / 13 / 15 / 00 / 00
2007 / 12 / 18 / 00 / 00

SO NO A320 deliveries in the year 2007-2009 all deliveries for 2007-2009 will be deferred or just 12 planes deferred 2007-2009 12 out of 40

The way I read it, this is the delivery schedule after the deferrals.
