There's so much traffic in the DCA-BOS corridor, that when you start getting significant numbers of aircraft deviating around weather the only way to handle it is to reduce the number of airplanes entering the airspace. That means spacing airplanes bound for, or departing from, airports in the NE further apart by holding them on the ground beyond their normal departure times.

Sat in PHL 2-3 hours this morning trying to get to DC only to have the flight as well as the one after it cancelled. Driving can be a lot less irritating sometimes.

This is what really frosts my cookies. BWI, PHL, LGA, EWR are ll close in proximity and generally use the same "airspace". Initially these storms did not directly effect any of these airports when the delay programs were started.

Can someone explain to me how delays in BWI, LGA and EWR averaged 42-52 minutes but delays in PHL averaged 113? Of course, the GDP doesn't say that the delays in PHL were attributed to SWAP, but instead blame Low Ceilings. I honestly think that PHL ATC intentionally screws with us.
 
The history of the larger delays, I believe, is two-fold. The two east-west runways are too close for true simultaneous takeoffs and landings, cutting capacity in half during bad weather. It is also a fact that the airspace gets stolen by both NYC and WAS when they have bad weather and need to stack airplanes. PHL gets dumped on from both directions.
 
To me, since this wasn't an issue of airport constraints - the weather was still in central OH when the GDP's started - then the delays at all 4 airports should have been equal. The constraints were due to airspace/route constraints - not a problem at the PHL airport. As the weather approached the individual airports, then you would expect different GDP's and Ground stops to control flow issues at that particular airport.

I thought PHL ran PRM ILS approaches to alleviate this. The only problem is you can't get close enough to the airport to shoot any kind of approach since you're holding at BUNTS.

And yet Southwest sees this as their Canaan land, theirs for the taking! :lol:

I don't think WN sees this as their Caanaan land. All they need to do is keep fares/revenue down for us in the few places we make money. They are strong enough to execute their plan while making little or no money.
