Supreme Court.......STRIKES DOWN...Defence of Marriage Act !

Illinois Senated passed a bill to allow same sex marriage. Gov said he would sign it. I think this will make #14.

Don't worry....be happy...we are a nation of Islam now.....Allah will fix this issue.

You mean the Islamic community won't be hosting any Gay marriages ?
Where's the outrage ?

Oh! I get it! It's ok for their religion to ban Gay Marriage, just not Christians !

What law has prohibited Christians from banning same sex marriage?  The laws being discussed only deal with states, not private companies.

An honest question to all here: What actually defines "Marriage" nowadays? I've honestly no personal concerns with any power-mad notions of controlling how any people choose to find and express love in this world, so long as they don't harm others, but what truly now defines the institution of marriage? What is it really, and what social/legal purposes does/should it now serve?

Its a legal contract.

The emotional/religious aspect is undefined and infinite in its variations.

Fair enough. Why seek to absurdly glamorize it with any other terms then? Why not simply eliminate the term "marriage" from all legal proceedings entirely? Should the next time I contract for a new deck/ jacuzzi installation be greeted by formal announcements for a "wedding reception" party and information of where the registry for gifts is?  Just askin' here...? 😉

I think the simplest answer is that if the term marriage is abandoned from the license then who protects the word? Any religion could use the term in any way they choose. The term would loose all meaning. Right now mariages are limited to two people. With out legal protection of the term that would dissapear. Religiius institutions would not be too happy.

I'm all for it. I would love to see the state only issue civil union licenses with the same rights and benifits of currwnt marriage. Never happen though.

Well...Any dictionary would, at least for a short time, yet protect the "word". Why should such trifling issues as that be of even the slightest concern? What's the "word" actually mean anymore anyway? You've flatly stated it to mean nothing more than a legal contract, so logically; maintaining any societal/linguistic references to an archaic notion seems foolishly wastefull, no? Who should now even care anything at all about the "word" anyway?

After all: "War is Peace"/"Freedom is Slavery/"Marriage is merely a legal contract".....? 😉

Meanings and usage of words change.  Marriage of toay is not marriage of the 1700 or 1800.  Women used to be property to be married off for power or alliances.  "Who gives this woman..."  Where do you think that originates from?

Marriage ceased being just a religious function when states started attaching benifits and rights to the 'word'.  At this point there are two different uses.  Legal and religious.  Same word, different meanings.

Sigh! Understood: "War is Peace"/"Slavery is Freedom"/etc...? Orwell.

“It would not be impossible to prove with sufficient repetition and a psychological understanding of the people concerned that a square is in fact a circle. They are mere words, and words can be molded until they clothe ideas and disguise.”

So Tree: Should any legal contract be nowadays termed a "marriage"? 😉  Is there anything at all more implied within the term "marriage" than merely a legal contract, and if so; what would that be? Did I just "marry" AT&T by way of signing on for additional years, so I could get some upscale phones? Should I send out wedding invitations and suggested gift registry info now? What type of reception should I host for my "marriage" to these new phones? 🙂

All marriages require a licence (to be recognized by the state/nation) and bind you legally (contract).  Not all contracts/licenses are marriages.
