When USAirways FAs were in the 'Countdown to Shutdown' in March 2000 where we were geared up and ready to strike, one of the main things that we were fighting for was to remove the social security offset- which basically deducts money from your retirement once you receive ss if you were married but does not affect you if you weren't married-highly discriminatory if you ask me and many others affected. There were other issues but we were ready to strike and our union reps were 'furiously negotiating' until past midnight behind closed doors. Basically we got screwed by our union reps and AFA who all had to be in bed with the company as only the company really benefited. They came out with some convoluted formula which actually was worse than the initial ss offset and came to a lower monthly payment-but to be fair, you were given a choice- the ss offset or this new payment which would be less money. Then our 'heroic' tearful union reps sobbed (as they were dramatically wiping the sweat off of their brows and the tears streaming down their cheeks) in front of the bright lights and tv cameras that they got us what were were ready to strike over thus brilliantly saving the airline. LIARS. Do not expect much from AFA. They are not the savior you want to believe they are and you need to expect disappointment. There will be this huge emotional crescendo as striking is threatened and there is all of this buildup and press coverage but in the end they will get you 'just enough' to keep you on the property. Not what you want but a little above what the company is offering and they will pound their chests with pride and expect you to thank them effusively, throw flower petals in their path and will them your firstborn. I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade but just letting you know from past experience what to expect. Been there, done that, bought the CHAOS t-shirt.
