What did Bush do when Putin sent troops into Georgia in 2008?  Nothing that's what.  And the truth is there's really not much either of them could have done to prevent Putin from doing what he wants.  Military options are off the table and he knows that.

"Truth is" there is a lot he could do! If he was a leader that would lead! For one he could give the green light on putting a Missile Defence system in the Chech Republic, and Finland! That alone would get Putin's attention! He could drive down the price of oil, and natural gas, by O.K.ing additional drilling on fedral lands and increasing exports. O.K.ing the keystone pipeline alone would put a dent in oil prices. Freezing Putin's personel assits, which I hear are quit sizable, would be a good starter.
 
I think putting misses in bordering countries would have escalated the confrontation . This k how thrilled the US was with missiles in Cuba. As for dropping the price of oil. Do you think OPEC would agree to a oil price drop? Putin has assets in the US the we could freeze?

Would it escalated the confrontation? Yes it would! That's the point! This is the only thing Putin understands! Opec? The U.S. now has enough oil that it could, by increasing exports, and opening up proven oil resourses, impact the priceof oil drastically, cutting off Russia's main source of income.
 
I was not aware that the US drilled for oil. Exactly what oil company does the US government run? Point being that oil companies are drilling for oil to make money. Do you want to subsidize the oil companies even more than we are now? Selling it at a loss tends to be bad for business. OPEC could drop their production to keep prices up (they like to make money too) so pardon me if I do not think it is quite that easy.

I do not think threatening a Psycho with conflict is a good idea. To me the question is, is Crimea actually worth US solders lives? Personally, I do not think so. If Europe is concerned, let them put some skin in the game for a change. We can stand behind them. No need for the US to be in the forefront every time. We see how well it worked in Afghanistan and Iraq and ... the list is long.

What do you mean "increasing exports"?  The US imports 40% of it's oil needs.  
 
People are kidding themselves if they think we are somehow going to become an exporter and drop oil prices.  Oil production here has been steadily increasing the past ten years yet prices are still high.

Obama now plans to treat Russia as America’s greatest geopolitical threat. Jeez, who else said that?  I’m trying my best to recall, but the Era of Hopenchange keeps calling and wants its fantasy world back.
 
I seem to recall an Axis of evil that still has not been dealt with as well. You can call who ever you want ever you want. Calling them names does not solve anything (as Bush proved). Just as he did not screw with that little twerp in N Korea (and rightly so IMO) messing around with Putin over something as petty as Crimea seems like a pointless endeavor. Like I said earlier, if Europe is concerned about Putin on their back door then let them put some skin in the game and we can stand behind them.
