U.S.-Approved Arms for Libya Rebels Fell Into Jihadis’ Hands
By JAMES RISEN, MARK MAZZETTI and MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT Published: December 5, 2012 297 Comments

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration secretly gave its blessing to arms shipments to Libyan rebels from Qatar last year, but American officials later grew alarmed as evidence grew that Qatar was turning some of the weapons over to Islamic militants, according to United States officials and foreign diplomats.

US sold the arms through Qatar, Obama signed off on a secret arms deal that was later revealed. The ambassador was CIA and his forte was gun running.....Duh

The mainstream media in the United States have increasingly come to the conclusion that the Benghazi attacks were related to a secret gun-running operation managed by the U.S. government to ferry weapons that had been used by Libyan rebels to Syria. Establishment media outlets reporting on the reputed CIA gun-running operation over the past week included Fox News' Geraldo Rivera, London's Daily Telegraph newspaper, and CNN television. The New American reported the same likely theory back in October and December 2012.

This is why Benghazi isn't important....Obama violated int'l law.

The job of an ambassador is to be a liaison with the recognized government. The seat of government wasn't in Benghazi, yet he was, so maybe you can explain what part of his job he was doing.
Was he visiting Benghazi or was that his permanent location?  Perhaps you omitted that point since the answer would not fit your preconceptions?

The ambassador works in the embassy. Consulates are outposts.

It was a rhetorical question.  The attack was at a consulate that the ambassador was visiting.  Your question regarding why the ambassador was in Benghazi while the embassy was in Tripoli seemed to imply that the ambassador has no business in Benghazi.  From what I have read it is quite common for ambassadors to visit the various consulates through out the country.  So I fail to see the purpose of your original question.

Visiting in the middle of the night? Yep, that's normal. Keep believing that.

There's probably more to why he was in an unsecure location in the middle of the night than anyone will ever discover or admit to, but you've swallowed the blue pill, so you don't need to care.

I may be wrong on this, but didn't he meet with the Turkish Ambassador just prior to the attack? -------- So what's he doing meeting with the Turkish Ambassador, in the middle of the night, in Benghazi of all places? --------- mmmmm?

If I recall correctly I was the one who earlier said that we won't get the truth.

If I'm going to a dangerous place I would consider going when people are less likely to think I would go.

So someone who may have lied 40 years ago is disqualified from from running for president.
If that is all you guys have, you may as well start calling Bill "first husband".
She is the most investigated possible candidate in the history of elections. If she runs, good luck digging up anything on her that already has not been published.
Wasn't he "First Husband" during the Clintons first go round?

I'll pass.

I guess he was doing what any ambassador does.
Playing target practice for terrorists? Didn't know that's what he signed up for!

I had know idea what I wrote could be construed in that manner.

It was a CIA annex not a consulate.

It was a CIA op....thats where a lot of the secrecy comes into play.

According to documents released by the House Oversight Committee, when the Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy signed an order last December to maintain a presence in the Benghazi compound for another year, his official memo counted 35 "U.S. government personnel," of whom only eight were State Department. Many of the rest were secretly with the CIA, the official confirmed.
The U.S. official noted that at no point in the October congressional hearing did any of the State Department officials testifying use the word "consulate" to describe the Benghazi compound. This was no accident. In fact, the compound served little routine diplomatic purpose, and was largely under the operational control of the CIA.

And Stevens did not belong there....

Stevens' last meeting on Sept. 11 was with Turkish Consul General Ali Sait Akin, and a source told Fox News that Stevens was in Benghazi "to negotiate a weapons transfer in an effort to get SA-7 missiles out of the hands of Libya-based extremists."
Since Stevens and his staff served as "diplomatic cover" for the CIA—only seven of more than 30 Americans evacuated from Benghazi worked for the State Department—the spy agency would certainly know about heavy weapons and Libyan jihadists flooding into Syria if Stevens did.
