Tilton Predicts Job Losses

When I listened to one of the VPs recordings she said that they would try to get as many as they can from retirements the next few years and the plan would not be in full effect untill around 2006 or 7. She did not make it sound like it would be a big chop all of a sudden, in fact she said it would be strung out. Now what this means for each group I dont know. I believe that the ramp is about as "to the bone" as it will get. We just had a open house(Sept. 8) to hire part-time rampers, and this was the second open house in like 1 month. BTW, I am only talking about IAD. I do not believe any other hub is hiring.

Probably just a coincidence but there are about 6,000 Mechanics left and the industry as a whole does seem to have a 'thing' about Mechanics....

Kcab,
Nah...I good deal will come from WHQ. How many, who knows.

If they want people to retire, why did they push the retirement age back by 5 years? Heck, ask me, I'll retire in a heartbeat.

Kcabpilot,

Ask Ronnin, the mechanics are already getting furlough notices. And Tiltons comments on the US governerment letting US airlines merge, OMG. Just what we need is TWO bankrupt airlines still merging.

Mr. Fish:

Where did you read about TWO airlines being merged in the article? I read it, but I didn't see anything about mergers, simply continued code sharing.

yeah its in another article. Tilton just used the "M" word. ugh...

I would not be surprised to see the majority of the cuts coming from WHQ. Case in point; M-F the employee lot is a sardine can. Sat-Sun provides you with premier parking. Amazingly, United runs just as smoothly (sometimes not so smoothly) on the weekends with our 'skeleton' crew as it does with our top-heavy crew during the normal work week. Hmmm. Every other airline I worked for was of the operating practice of, 'if your department is not required to be staffed 7 days a week, your department is not needed'. The sad fact, after 2 years of Chapter 11 operations, is that we still have an Executive Chef, Senior Staff Communications VP (huh?), other departments paid millions/yr to provide information affecting operational decisions which is now FREE and FAA legal from the internet, etc. All you need to do is walk around both buildings on the weekend to view the ghost town of empty desks, wondering how indeed does UAL survive without these departments for 2 days?

Tilton's first cut should be done by looking in the mirror.

Easy answer for you, Kev. How many CEO's have been forced out of the airline business? And, let's see, sacking the CEO has ALWAYS solved the problem, right?

Pay attention. Business issues should always be studied with one's head. Save your heart for your family and friends.

Actually, I was "studying with my head." How much is Tilton making right now? Why is he being rewarded for a continuing failure? If leadership (not just UA) wants/expects the rank and file to step up, then they need to lead the way. Otherwise, it's just hot air.

How would you lead?

Tilton did take a 10% pay cut I think that dropped him down to the 850K range I believe. Are they still housing him in that hotel in downtown Chicago, part of his pact when he signed on? It doesn't look good when you got CEO's at other majors making half that. Ask what Jake and McDonald are making, I am sure it is equal to or more then the USAIR and Delta CEO's are making. Shameless really, but I guess they sleep OK at night. While they have destroyed and will continue to destroy so many dedicated employees lives.

It still amazes me that Goodwin, Dutta, McDonald, and Brace haven't been indicted for what they did to UAL and the lose of the employees ESOP. 5.5 Billion in wage concessions from the 90's era, while UAL made about 12 billion and flushed it all down the toilet instead of recession proofing UniTED for the future.

Personally I think they should be working for FREE till they can prove to the employees that they can sit down and really come up with a viable business plan. Instead of going after jobs, pay, and pensions in they’re up coming game plan. WHY AREN’T THESE GUYS FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES?????
