Why do you people think that this merger will have any negative effect on SWA? It won't....at least for a very long time, and the chance of this new entity surviving til that point is more unlikely than not. Good luck with it, but relax on the WN bashing.

Um... Letterman you are not. You should only attempt to make jokes if you're actually funny, like me.

Honestly I think the HP and US folks have earned some right to do a little WN bashing. How many times have they heard how WN will run them into the ground? Yes a lot to prove still...and that is the direction Doug is pointing everyone. Focus on the customer, keeping costs low, and being the best...and they'll start winning a few instead of running from the red belly warbirds.

thats GREAT...it will happen...

You neglected to add "when pigs fly."

I don't think I know any Southwest folks who wish ill on US, HP, or any other carrier's employees.

All of this "we've merged and now we're going to run Southwest out of business" is at best premature and more likely...completely ludicrous.

Let me share a little tale about the boys and girls from Dallas. They are nobody's fools.

The big, bad Braniff, back when they were in fact big and bad, threw everything and the kitchen sink at Southwest to put them out of business. American may have gotten off scott free for what they did to Vanguard, but Braniff actually was convicted of anti trust violations for their actions toward Southwest.

Southwest has spent the last 34 years looking over their shoulder and the merger of these two carriers is not going to catch them napping.

Southwest has raised cost control to a new art form...no, it's more like a religion. How do you think they manage a 7.70 cent ASM cost on shorter routes than either of you guys while paying their people livable wages? It's because they watch their costs.

The new HP+US may have decent ASM costs. That remains to be seen. But I'm here to tell you that you aren't going to take HP with costs above Southwest's, merge it with USAirways with costs considerably higher than either carrier, fly a bunch of RJs around, and end up with a lower ASM cost. It isn't going to happen.

Competition is fine. Wanting to put together a good airline and provide good service is a noble goal. Striving to carry more traffic than your competition is a good thing.

But before you go crowing about how you're going to put them out of business, you might want to think about how everyone got to the place they are currently at.

Southwest didn't get to be #1 at Las Vegas...carrying fully 2x as many psgrs as the #2 carrier HP by accident.

If you strip out all of the connecting stuff at Phoenix Southwest may be beggier, or about the same size, as the hometown airline. On almost all of the businessman routes from Phoenix...LAX, SAN, ELP, ABQ, ONT, BUR, SLC.....Southwest has a commanding market share lead.

Southwest didn't take over Baltimore without a fight.

Southwest hasn't grown from 0 to 50 trips a day in and out of Philadelphia...to become the #2 carrier at that airport...in a year.

Everybody says the only reason they do well is price. Everybody is wrong. USAirways has matched or beaten their price on all those new competitive routes. Still, people line up to get on Southwest. Did you ever stop to think they may be doing something right?

There's plenty of business out there to support different airlines offering different products. Maybe HP and US will get together and find a lucrative niche and prosper.

But if the goal is to kill Southwest, you might as well drink strychnine now and save yourself the effort later. A good way to lose a lot of money in a hurry is to try and hurt Southwest.

I think the problem is U still doesn't know what kind of airline it wants to be. They keep touting point-to-point but have tons of RJs and an international division. All this hype is just that. U is the corporate equivilent of a junkie that just got a sugar-daddy to throw money at their drug habit. Sooner rather than later the money runs out and they're still a junkie. Not until they REALLY change their business model will I believe otherwise. Calling yourself a LCC doesn't make you one.

I hate to break it to ya, but Weener For Life makes it very clear that he delights in the misfortunes of other carriers' employees on a daily basis. He lurks over at Airliners.Net as well and incites, inflames, and provokes.

This fool has no class and no respect for the plight of others.

"Weener For Life" that fit so well.

Weenerlet needs to give it a break as well!

Very apt description of Weener for Life.

Many passengers and WN employees alike are not convinced weener for life is actually employed by WN. There's some speculation that he/she/it (pick one) is nothing more than a 14 yr old kid who says stupid vrap to raise everyone's collective blood pressure.

If it turns out he or she is, and if his or her identity is ever discovered, I think Weener for Life's career will have the shelf life of a 6 month old package of ground meat that hasn't been kept in the refrigerator.

On the other hand, he/she/it may not get fired...that would only result in a grievance. It might be more like when hippie protesters wandered on to the campus of Texas A&M in the late 60s.

They were politely collected, stuffed into burlap bags, beaten with axe handles, and thrown in to the Brazos River.

Do you reckon that might alter the tone of his or her posts?

Hey, I let your MX guys come in at BWI WN's stockroom an borrow or give them misc parts that cost a few cents and can ground an aircraft. I ship your AOG Parts on WN flights which saves you a lot of money and does nothing for us. Should I reconsider doing this since you are going to bash WN. Nobody at our level is out or can put anyone out of a job. We are people first company's second. I will help anyonebody that asks as long as the "tude" is checked at the door.

I think it will be more like WN and the new U both do very well in the new low cost domestic market and the rest of the legacy carriers continue to go bankrupt and they all merge together 2 at a time until the game is over. If in the end WN has nothing more to offer but low fares they may find it difficult to compete
