Two passenger jets came within 40 seconds of a mid-air collision 34,000 feet above Kristiansand in southern Norway.

One plane was a KLM flight from Trondheim in Norway to Amsterdam, while the other was an SAS plane from Copenhagen to New York. Between them, the planes were carrying 348 passengers and crew.

The newspaper VG said that the two planes were approaching each other at right angles when an alarm went off, and one pilot took his plane higher while the other went into a descent.

Only one air traffic controller was on duty at the time and was not aware of the near-miss.
