U.S. stalls US Airways-Delta plan to swap slots

DL and US supported by all of the network airlines are arguing that the US government does not have the legal right in any department to block or force the transfer of slots between airlines based on economic reasons.

DL and US are willing to give up the slots they have said solely because the legal process of challenging the FAA will take years and there are economic costs to inaction - both of using slots they don't want to use and not being able to use the slots they want.

DOT refuses to budge on slot divestitures and rejects the alternate plan put forth by DL and US:

Looks like the deal is dead unless DL and US backpedal and accept the DOT demands.
