United Airlines is in talks with Embraer and Bombardier to buy new narrow-body planes amid a fleet makeover to reduce its reliance on unprofitable regional jets, people familiar with the matter said Wednesday.

The talks involve the largest models in Embraer's E-Jets family and Bombardier's smallest CSeries, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details are private.
Having the smaller 100 seaters at mainline would be an approach that neither AA or DL seem to be following. I'd think that the economics of the C-Series and E195-E2 would be a little more lucrative than what AA and DL are seeing with the A319 or B717.

Bombardier might just be willing to to anything to boost its order book (<250 sold as of now). The CSeries program is burning up cash, an order from UA would be a huge lift for the company.  Right now LH (30 CS100s for 2015) and AF (40 CS300s for 2017) are the biggest orders.

Had Delta not gotten the sweet deal on the 717 they would have also looked into other options. (C-series with a mix of used 319/73Gs is what we were told.)
