UAL ramps up merger talks

If this merger would take effect, why would the DOJ change their stance from the last time?

Could play out like this ..... US Airways has already made a legitimate offer for Delta. United makes an offer for Delta, Delta says hell no again .... UA has already courted Continental.

Who cried bloody murder the last time UA/US tried getting together ???? Answer DL/CO/NW ..... they won't have a leg to stand on this time, will they?

The way I understood it, one of the major sticking points for the DOJ was the monopoly that would have been created with all three DC airports under one airline umbrella. Since US has given LUV BWI, that argument is now moot, while the two gems, DCA and IAD, remain.
I see no reason why DOJ would disapprove a US/UAL merger.

Notice how everyone from LCC wants it to happen but no one from UA does?

UBS upgraded U.S. Airways to neutral from reduce, saying potential catalysts for the stock include a capacity cut by rival Southwest Airlines Co., which would improve the outlook for domestic fares.

U.S. Airways shares are also down more than 50% so far this year in a tough domestic environment, UBS said.

"There have been good reasons for the underperformance but at this point we believe the stock has washed out and will move nicely higher with any good news," according to UBS.

Still, U.S. Airways isn't well-positioned in the current airline environment, UBS said. "The company is primarily a domestic airline with significant Southwest overlap in what is clearly a weaker domestic economy."

LCC stock is in the tank.

Doug and the eunuchs are in way over their simple heads.

United buying LCC and giving the current management a bunch of money to go away makes sense to me.

All this talk. United doesn't want USAIR.. You can betcha
they are going to make a bid for USAIR so the big carrier's like Delta and CO will go ahead and be pushed into a merge either or with UAL. You can also bet with our star alliance LF German airline will blow these others carriers into a tailspin that United ends up with whom they really want (DL or CO). LF is going to end up buying BMI Airlines and this will hurt BA. Virgin Atlantic wants a bigger piece of the pie into LHR so they will end up with LF German airlines tied with BMI to be part of our Star Alliance. It's all going to take place soon. This will leave Jetblue and small carriers merging also once all this is done global. United hasn't made any aircraft orders and our employees aren't happy either over in Chicago. Things will start happening soon. Heck- Fedex already has painted a bad economy for shipping in wall street today. So the airlines will all be next reshaping what needs to take place for the next century. It's like the housing market something has to bust or change to restart this economy or position it for a better world. If we end up with USAIR . let hope they fire both sides of management at UAL and USAir and start over.
United would be better off with Delta or CO though. Because of all the labor problems at USAIR. No offense.
We have our problems over at UAL also.
They aren't good. At least we got CHINA wrapped up
Just dot the eyes and cross your T's it will happen soon.

Notice how everyone from LCC wants it to happen but no one from UA does? Hmmmmmm........ I wouldn't hold my breath on this one happening. (although it would be funny to see USA320 flying JUNIOR with the Nic award)

LCC can't even handle the messy merge they are in right now, they certainly can't handle anything as big as United.

It's very true nobody does want to merge with USAIR only because of how bad it is over there. I know the people of United will fight this just like Delta did. A merge would be a disaster for both carriers. Look at America West and USAirways nothing good about so far. You have unions that will never be happy.

Except the management, who mentions it every week, and has practically taken out a personal ad.

Exactly why US & UA will soon combine.

Glenn/Jake and 400 of their close friends at the top are dedicated to cashing in and riding off.

This will happen. Good luck!

(btw: that Montana woman was properly treated by UA -- she bought a deep discount and received commensurate value)

I'm ready for something. Merge the f#%k away. My only conditions:

-My DOH (UA, NW)

-an airline that has hired in the last decade, therefore having people junior to me, and people in thier twenties with a little life in them (anyone) Actually I dont even care if Im senior to them, just let me work with someone whos not menopausal, sorry Im over it.

-an airline with enough international routes that transatlantic flights are not considered to be in line with discovery of the holy grail (again, anyone)

-an airline with expertise outside of the spring break Vegas crowd (anyone other than Trailer West)

-an airline with multiple bases throughout the country, so I dont have to listen to some dingbat waffle on about thier small, RJ-only hometown and how it should be not only a base but a major hub. Go away!

-big enough with enough assertive people that we can get a livable contract, as opposed to a few selfish people deciding things who believe every liquidation threat that comes along. Grow a pair.

-anyone that will not make STUPID decisions like removing closets and launching a primitive res system to save a minimal amount and embarrass its employees to a point where they dont want to go to work.

-launch enough consolidation that the industry stabilizes, and me and other airline employees can afford to eat. I'm done paying for your cheap ticket. Is it showing? Good!

Back to my glass of wine, I'm not one to express my opinions. MERGE MERGE MERGE!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, MERGE AWAY......just not with United.

We have enough of our own troubles.

Well I dont think either of us have a choice. Your company is merging. We're used to mergers over here, we're a bit of a promiscuous airline- three way marriages, deals with Donald Trump, jilted at the altar, hooking up with low class in Vegas, forcing ourselves on the unwilling... US Airways is busier than Susan Lucci.

The way the East pilots have been behaving with regard to the seniority merge will make any other pilot group out there fight very hard to avoid merging with LCC. At an airline with a strong pilot group (like UA), that likely will go a long way towards killing any deal.

I'm confident the United pilots will be able to effectively kill any proposed merger, the way they have the past two attempts.

 I prefer CBS. But even I stopped watching Bold the the Beautiful. 🙄 USAirways is more like Brook Logan...one big mess with only three men to choose from in the last 10 years. How many times can she try to get with Ridge (United)only to fall flat on her face with Stephine (DAL) pulling her hair?

  Now that was funny as hell! Finally a sense of humor.

I hope so.

In the previous merger attempt, UAL employees, most notably the pilot group, had a big lever in the 'employee ownership' program. Since being washed through the bankruptcy wringer, that no longer applies.
Employees from any airline can complain, wish, want, kick, scream, cajole, and pray just as much as they want - and it won't make a bit of difference as to the outcome. The power/money people are driving the bus, and we are all just along for the ride.....
