Hmmm. After a recent absence I was curious as to what the response would be from Mr. Munn in rebus the latest results posted by United. One certainly expected rough sailing from the double bloody lip of the war east of the Levant and SARS. These events would without question give a good seeing-to to any airline with such global exposure.
Of course, I temper the word “curious†that I employed with the expectation that I knew quite well what the response would be. Henny Penny prognostications of the direst consequence - The Washington hub will be closed (followed by others in a serial manner), DIP covenants will not be met, fracturization, liquidation, pestilence, famine, a great outcrying in the land. There are even now rumours of a peasant revolt in the Ukraine and a run on the rice market in Indonesia. I could hardly imagine the unrestrained glee and exultation of our dutiful scribe as this news was broken on the United message board.
In fine disputative style, the trusty United posters acknowledged the gravity of the situation but looked deeper into the numbers of the past few months and tried to glean hints as to what to expect in the next quarter. With the war and SARS receding into the past, they make a good argument for improved performance. Were the numbers bad? Indeed. Indisputably bad in fact. They are however, “sunk†and the true test will be quarters three and four.
I for one do not understand why every problem is so portrayed as the coup de fin of United Airlines. In a battered industry there are always problems aplenty. There will be new ones every day. The measure is not the existence of the problem but rather the mastery of it. I read of United’s express carrier in Washington stepping away from the feedbag. Yes a genuine problem perhaps. I though for one do not consider Mr. Tilton of such diminished intellectual faculty that he and his negotiators did not see this as a potential outcome irrespective of “surprise†that was expressed in news releases.
Now. Mr. Munn advocates that 767jetz directs his anger toward me as the reason for him being a blighter on this board. In the style of a gentleman, 767jetz, kindly demurred the offer to do so. In fact, if I go to check the membership book, I believe that we had issued 767jetz a membership card to the Sophist and Flat Earth Society. He would certainly not air his disputes with another member in such a forum!
For those however, who wish to direct anger, we could set up a picture of the good customer Ukridge. As in Orwellian 1984 style, those so inclined to express anger for my having “dragged†this pestilence over to this board would have recourse and redress. My picture could be flashed on the board (in a nature similar to the moderator’s) for five minutes a day. Just as the “hate screens†in the aforementioned book, the reader could then rant and rage for the allotted time. A much preferable solution could be found however. As I rather wish to remain in anonymity, I would humbly ask if Mr. Munn himself would take this role?
I am pleased to have seen a number of new posters in this discussion. Enjoy!

What a great pleasure it is to read your contributions again, UK! Were you aware that you were in possession of such incredible thaumaturgic powers that force individuals to appear in areas they wish not to tread and respond against their will?
Honorable sir, do what is right and please accept the blame you so rightly deserve, you most powerful and omnipotent gem!
It is an honor to share this space with you, I was completely unaware that you were dubbed "he whom shall be obeyed" -- My hat is off to you!
Best to you and yours, and to all airline employees, everywhere. It is, indeed, a most difficult time in the industry.

To all the good UA employees and supporters of our great airline, who are tired of the negative bashing by a certain few:

Are you tired of the constant baiting and bashing by people like Chip? Then join me in a 2 week boycott of this board! Call it a vacation, a siesta, or whatever you want. Or if you prefer, how about at least a 2 week break from responding to Chip's negativity.

Help restore this board to a place we can come to discuss the ins and outs of our airline, without the venom of a few posters. I submit that if Chip is left talking to himself, he will leave and find another audience.

As of 11:59pm Sunday August 3rd, I will be signing off for 2 weeks. To those who stay, I wish you the best.

Anyone care to join me?

Cloudy skies for United

Carrier's $623M Q2 loss mars progress made toward bankruptcy exit
DENVER (Rocky Mountain News) - A $300 million aid package from the federal government wasn't enough to keep United Airlines' parent company from posting the worst loss in the industry in the second quarter.
Complete Story: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/busi...2153811,00.html

Today the Rocky Mountain News reported:
"If you compare how they're doing to where they were last year, they're doing even worse," said Douglas Baird, who teaches bankruptcy law at the University of Chicago. "I don't know how soon these (lender) covenants will bite. The bottom-line reality is, you can't lose $600 million in a quarter continuously and thrive."
"My take on United as a whole is they're running a good airline operationally, but they just don't know where to put their aircraft to make money," said Josh Marks, associate director of George Washington University's Aviation Institute. "The travel market is coming back, and United has cut their labor costs," Marks said. "The question comes down to, where can they fly where they won't get hammered by low-cost carriers?"
Some analysts fear time is running short for UAL to figure that out. "I think what the future portends depends on what happens after about Sept. 15 when peak travel drops off and they are forced to depend on business travel," said industry consultant Bob Mann. "I have to say there is obviously some concern whether they'll meet those (lender requirements) at that time. It seems that particular hurdle (of exiting bankruptcy) is running away from them as fast as they're approaching it," Mann said.

Chip, so far, who have you applied to for "Airline Analyze"?
