United merger with Usairways?

What stood out in that article the most was the following:

"Early this year, however, talk of consolidation died down after Delta rejected the US Airways bid. Some analysts believe airlines will resist mergers until an industry downturn and financial instability make it necessary for survival."

I think those analysts are right on. Futhermore, thats why I suggest shorting all airline stocks. The airlines have never been willing to change (i.e can't put the pressure on the unions) until their backs are against the wall. By that time, usually their equity will be in the crapper. Some people like the great Warren Buffet get this.

Everybody here better hope we end up merging with United. They are combining with someone. If its Continental or Delta, we are screwed. American would outbid us for Northwest, and we would be runway roadkill. There is no way we could compete with those giants even if we half had our act together. Even if we did get Northwest, compared to a UACO or AADL we'd still be by far the weakest network carrier.

Can we sell off the America West part to AirTran or someone lol

First off, why the hell would you sell off the America West part of it? It is not the front line folks there that are the problem, it is Tempe. Plus we have a pretty damn good route system out of PHX.

Second of all, it was always my humble opinion that if we had bought Delta, Tempe would have made PHL and CLT into outposts of their former selves. Selling off large amounts of east and using JFK and ATL as our hubs.

I do agree that we had better hope we end up merging with someone like united. That is the only way we are going to survive.

With united you will get a good IT department. I always thought the merger with DL was to get the best IT Dept in the industry. The rest was just an extra.

Tempe just can't seem to get their act togeather with IT, and your only hope is to merge with an airline that has good IT.

I agree here 100%!! I have NEVER had a beef with the employees. It is the insane management team in Tempe.

An airline analyst opined that Dougie should sell off US-East to UAL, going along as the gnu CEO and let US-West die. That might help reduce capacity, buoying the industry as a whole.

After all, what, exactly, does US-West bring to Star Alliance, anyway?

Didn't Worldspan (Deltamatic) get bought by Galileo/Travelport (United).

UA does not have good IT... It might be better than US, but it isn't good by any stretch of the imagination.

It was a joke. Sell off the management, if anyone would pay for them. The route system out of PHX is OK, other western hubs are more developed and have or can justify transpacific service. The city's O&D is growing though and being so southwest offers some unique network opportunities.

I wasn't serious, I dont think they can "de-merge" at this point... I do however think US is better as part of a UAL or such and HP is better as part of an actual LCC. US 'East' would be a much more attractive merger partner without "US West".

I agree in the Delta scenario the east hubs (not the focus cities) would be drastically reduced. I'll take "Bloody Obvious" for $200 Alex! However in any of these newer merger scenarios, its these hubs themselves, and of course the Shuttle, that are sought after. These are particularly of interest to Star (who doesnt seem to claim us these days, or maybe the sandcastle is too stupid to understand what it is.)

Major airline seeks similar with northeast routes, southern tier hub, for hot merger action. I like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain. U B into LatAm, new liveries, widebody orders. Drug, disease, bankrupcy free U B 2. No LCCs or regionals please.1-800-United-1 (1-800-864-8331)Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Another dead giveaway for a merger is that Pineybob was at ORD yesterday. He was probably at UAL headquarters. You know AAA and UAL would not make a move without his input.

Pineybobs visit to ORD.
