Is that true or are you just joking?

So is the plane OK and when will it be back in service? Have cancellations spread around the system or is there a spare? Thank god the tug operator is OK. A NW mech was crushed in ORF about 2 years ago and there was not even a gear collapse.

Heinrich,

The plane is not ok. There appears to be a crease in the skin near the impact area, let alone it also landed on the towbar.

There are a lot of critical structural elements surrounding the nose wheel well....particularly the sta. 178 bulkhead. If that area was damaged, everyone should get a Snickers bar.....because it's going to be a while before this bird flys again 😉 .

It also appears that the #2 VHF COMM Antenna is contacting the ground which could mean damage to the belly. The lower TCAS and ATC antennas are also history.

More than likely the something in the "draglink" assy. failed and caused the collapse. Judging by the pic I would say it did fold as "neatly" as it could of into the gearwell.

those are very excellent photos BoeingBoy. Is this plane now essentially a write as it looks from the damages? Also looks as though the number two engine may be damaged on the cowling

What are the chances that they'll part 'er out on the spot if the damage is too great? 🙁

Edit: From a post on Airliners.net:

"I was just discussing this with my father, who's a maintenance control foreman for the Airbuses for USAirways here at PIT, said the damage is a lot worse than it looks. He said that the guys from the Boeing desk said the nose gear is really f'ed up. He wouldn't go any further in detail on how it happened, but he mentioned that the castings in the wheel well that hold the nose gear in place, were torn from the airframe."
