US Airways aircraft by the numbers

I can understand fleet numbers changing, but where is it written that the registration number must match the fleet number? I know AA and others have different numbers (or letters in AA's case).

That said why would it be necessary to reregister these aircraft? I am not sure if it is legally required that fleet and tail numbers match..or is it?

No, they don't have to match. I know that DL has many A/C that have a different 4 digit "Ship" # that doesn't match the registration "N" number. I also remember DL flying a few former Western A/C that were registered outside if the US.
