Will US eventually discontinue complimentary meals in economy on international flights? Seems this is possibly a step in that direction. I've only had a few US meals in flights to PHX and wasn't pleased.

I doubt they will, they learned their lesson from the soda fiasco. This is just a way for a passenger to enjoy a better meal and the company to make some extra money.

And US doesnt offer free meals in coach on domestic flights.

Air France and KLM does the same, as does Hawaiian.

"The new DineFresh meal option, which is paired with complimentary wine, ..."

It is not clear in the press release whether the wine includes refills. If so, and the premium reals are good, this is not a bad deal on a long haul flight.

I doubt there will be refills. The wine served with the meal may be a 1/4 size bottle (good for about 2 cups). Or it may just be a plastic cup with wine poured from a full bottle in the galley.

$20 seems a bit pricey unless the quality of the food is really good -- especially if you don't want the wine. I just can't see there being a high demand for this, but if US can make some extra money from a small percentage of passengers, more power to them. I can find much better uses for $20.

I'm curious how this pans out. I like the concept, especially if the food and wine quality is up to snuff.

It's next to impossible to get a cup of coffee in the back. No idea how they are going to get the crew to serve a "premium" dinner.

Better give them all early retirements and hire people who want to do the job.

Came across this article today:

US Airways recently became what it calls the first U.S. carrier to offer coach-class customers the option to select a "premium meal option" on international flights.
A premium meal means that you get a little taste of first or business class in economy. As is usually the case with first or business class, that option comes with an extra charge -- $19.99.
I recently had a chance to sample the premium meal on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal. <snip>
