US Airways the first to offer to assist FlyI customers

As far as I'm concerned, you've both got a point.....

Oft times in the past, the old US would have been the last to announce something like this - if they did at all. So in that respect, this is an improvement.

And as PineyBob says, the job of the PR department is to make the ordinary sound extraordinary, or in this case make the required sound as if it's something special we're doing.

But as US1FARE says, we appear to have seats on sale for many of the markets FlyI served for less than the "special" deal we're giving their ticket holders on confirmed seats - some as early as this Saturday. We even appear to have some for little more than we're charging FlyI ticket holders for standby.

Given the yield that even the $50 standby fee will generate - from a minimum of about 1.7 cents/mile to a max of about 25 cents/mile - it would have been nice to see us do something different from everyone else.

So if a customer qualifies for a LOWER fare, they can buy the lower fare. We are telling them that they won't have to pay MORE then 100.00 each way.

I hope you're right about the price they'll actually pay, MMW. But what the press release actually says is "With this in mind, US Airways is offering customers affected by the shutdown the opportunity to purchase a confirmed ticket for only $100 each way."

Admittedly, the savy FlyI passenger will probably be smart enough to shop around for another low fare and take their chances on getting a refund from FlyI.

It is interesting to note that $100 combined with the length of FlyI's average passenger trip generates a yield of over 15 cents per mile - higher than US's average yield.

Here's what ASSISTANCE IS ALL ABOUT:

Jetblue official release

As you know, Independence Air will cease operations on Thursday, January 5, 2005. While this is a competitive industry, we certainly extend our deepest sympathy to the employees affected by the carrier's shut down. Please know that JetBlue's recruitment temas will do their best to reach out to the people of Independence Air over the next several weeks and months.

One way we can assist some Independence Air employees immediately is by honoring jumpseat requests from Independence Pilots and Flight Attendants untel February 5, 2005.

All individuals granted jumpseat permission will occupy cabin seats since they may no longer have the required company-issued IDs to display while sitting in an actual jumpseat. In lieu of an ID, individuals requesting jumpseat permission must show a FLYi pay stub from 2005 at the ticket counter along with their FAA Airmen or Flight Attendant Certificate.

Our hearts go out to the individuals and families affected by this shutdown and ask that you extend them every courtesy.
