Us Airways To End Pit To Europe Flights

Airline to cut Frankfurt route

"US Airways dealt Western Pennsylvania a psychological and economic blow when it announced Thursday that it is cancelling Pittsburgh International Airport's only nonstop European flight -- to Frankfurt, Germany -- beginning Nov. 7."

"It's a very dark day ... and a strong blow to our community," said Kent George, executive director of the Allegheny County Airport Authority.

Who first reported on this website that the Pittsburgh to London and Pittsburgh to Frankfurt flights would be cut?

Again, the "Transformation Plan" calls for US Airways to add Philadelphia to Europe service to new destinations next spring where there are Star Alliance hubs with the aircraft previously dedicated to fly from Pittsburgh to Europe, provided the company does not file for bankrputcy.

If the company files for bankruptcy as early as next month, then this new service will likely not be added because Bruce Lakefield indicated to the ALPA MEC yesterday that the A330 leases could be rejected in the "formal reorganization".

DO YOU HAVE A LIFE????????????????????????

on a completely different topic (didn't want to start a new one), I see that SEA is up to 9X daily departures for awhile... 1X CLT, 3X PIT, and a whopping 5X PHL... can anyone explain this? Does demand fluctuate that much seasonally?

And what is the big deal with PIT not having non stop service to FRA?

At the risk of sounding rude, can they not make connections like other cities?

Demand to/from SEA is very seasonal, however this might also be a result of the fruits of the UA codeshare, as SEA is UA's 6th biggest domestic station IIRC (after the 5 hubs) with plenty of frequent flyers. Also better to use resources to serve SEA where US has a nonstop monopoly. Maybe US should consider adding BOS-SEA (move one of the PIT flights), though this would compete with AS and AA.

Well poor, poor Bayer. How long have they been in Pittsburgh? How many years prior to service to FRA did they have to go elsewhere for their flts to Europe? Such is life. There's a shiny A330 headed to Frankfurt every night out of PHL and CLT. There are alot of European companies and American companies with European ties that must connect somewhere for their travels. Bayer won't be the first or last, but guess what? They will adjust.

Nice attitude to have for your number one customer PIT-FRA!

If a Bayer passenger has to change aircraft don't you think they would choose to connect to LH in EWR and fly directly to Dusseldorf, which is much closer to Leverkusen, the Bayer headquarters?

Don't be so smug...US can't afford to lose too many more customers!

That EWR-DUS LH biz jet service, while nice, is limited and not cheap. About $6000 RT last time I checked. It's flown on a modified A319 (they also use a 737) with around 50 business class seats. Imagine that - a narrowbody over the Atlantic. But, certainly comfy. Like your very own G5. Maybe not quite....

No folks, I think the majority of Bayer employees in PIT will be hopping a flight to PHL and connecting to the LH A340 or US A330. I don't know why people kept fixating on Bayer being the only reason PIT kept the flight around this long. Have they really been putting enough people on it all these years to make it profitable???

Oh, give me a break. Everyone has a heartbreak story in the 'burgh. Join the long list of cities and businesses that suffered because of U closing hubs. BTW, smug is as smug experienced. Man, paybacks are a b****.
