US Express to end service to IPT

Loosing IPT isn't the half of it for EXPRESS folks----with the DASH 8 showing its worth again and the horrendous Weedeater jet contracts with MAINLINE its only how soon the CHAPT 11 cards will start falling from the deck----it shouldn't take long to start happening say around the first of the year---IPT is just one leaf of the tree falling over.

You may have a good point. Eric Morgan (VP EN Customer Service Ops) is making the rounds in August to some of the smaller stations. Wonder what is so important to make him visit smaller express stations....hum. Good luck to all at US and US Express!

Wendy's just got bought out by Arby's about two months ago.

RDG actually is larger in Population than Harrisburg and the 5th largest City in PA. Reading is just a difficult place to get to or leave from. Only limited Bus service to NYC, and scarcer to Philadelphia. Buses break down daily on those routes. Thanks to Conrail dissolving train service from Reading.

The Harrisburg MSA is 100k people larger than the Reading MSA.

Essential Air Service at Williamsport, Pennsylvania

Order 2008-7-14
OST-2008-0200

Issued July 9, 2008 | Served July 14, 2008

Order Prohibiting Suspension of Service and Requesting Proposals | Word

By this order, the Department is prohibiting Piedmont Airlines, Inc., d/b/a US Airways Express from suspending service at Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and requesting proposals by July 29 from carriers interested in providing replacement essential air service, with or without subsidy. Piedmont’s proposed termination of service at Williamsport would leave it with no scheduled air service. Therefore, the Department must prohibit the carrier from terminating such service at the end of its 90-day notice period, and require it to maintain two daily nonstop round trips to Philadelphia for an initial 30-day period, through October 23, 2008.

Specifically for Williamsport, we are requesting proposals for service consisting of four daily round trips with 19-seat aircraft, three daily round trips with 30 seaters, or two daily round trips with 37-seat aircraft. We will entertain proposals to Philadelphia, New York, Washington, or any suitable hub offering connections to the national air transportation system.

Carriers interested in providing EAS at Williamsport, with or without subsidy support, should file their proposals no later than July 29.

That Sucks!

Reading is 5x the size and metro area a lot greater than that, and we can get nothing. I am tired of this state wasting money on those western half and Northeast PA. Southeast PA is making money and nothing is done here to improve commuter solutions. Pittsburgh got 2 New stadiums courtesy of SE PA. OK Steelers fill those stadiums up, but PNC Park, looks like ghost town, waste of PA funds. Now building them and Arena. Hershey, Reading and all Philadelphia's 3 arenas ( Wachovia Center, Wachovia Spectrum, and the New Temple U. Arena) are ALL profiting while Pittsburgh can not even fill their arena 1/2 way on most nights. This state is just wasting money spending on the rest of the state. It just stinks that Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Harrisburg, Reading, Philadephila and the southeast keeps pumping in the money, and all we do is waste it on the other part of the state where only a slect few can prosper. I can rant all day, sorry folks. !

while Pittsburgh can not even fill their arena 1/2 way on most nights.
In case you haven't noticed, the Pens have been filling their arena (which is the oldest and most out of date in the NHL). Didn't Philly also get 2 new stadiums before they imploded the Vet?

Who PAID for them?

citizens bank park and the wachovia center are the 2 sports stadiums and they do very well. I agree that it sucks that either way the way the state operates it sucks. I dont know how MDT could lose any phl flts as they have a better pax load than abe let alone ipt. I would think they would lose the bos trip before any phl trips but i could be wrong I often wondered if US will yank the Airbus out of ABE and put either one or two EMB 190s in place of it I know it would be a lot less in the outrageous landing fees we pay at ABE while the Allegiant comes in for free and that is a fact according to people I know who work for the airport and work the allegiant planes

I know MDT will lose AA soon, but UA flies some mainlines in as well as some RJ's I think US flies a mainline into MDT as well from CLT. I am going back a few months, but when my AA RJ from DFW landed, I saw a US Airbus there, not sure if 319 or 320 but it just came in before us. UA flies a M/L in at least once a day if not twice.

i know that UA flies a 737-500 and a 737-300 and some rjs as for US i think they have a 319 and a 320 but I could be wrong on that part

5 flights a day to IPT and not bad load factors. Not sure who at US is the one who figured they could get subsidized for this city, my best are its going to Colgan or Gulfstream. Load factors are below.. while a full plane doesn't mean profits, there was room to axe a flight or two and be able to accomodate the travelers in the market.

Load factors from last year:

38.62% Jan

42.49% Feb

43.98% Mar

39.71% Apr

40.59% May

41.23% Jun

41.64% Jul

42.30% Aug

42.43% Sep

45.71% Oct

42.98% Nov

41.43% Dec

Order Re-Soliciting Proposals

By Order 2008-7-14, July 9, 2008, the Department prohibited Piedmont from suspending service and requested proposals for replacement service consisting of four round trips a day with 19-seat aircraft, three round trips a day with 30 seaters, or two round trips a day with 37-seat aircraft. In response to our request, we received proposals from Piedmont (the incumbent), Mesaba and Colgan Air. However, none of the proposals met the requirements outlined in that order.

In addition to prohibiting Piedmont from suspending service at the end of its 90-day notice period, Order 2008-7-14 required the carrier to maintain two daily nonstop round trips to Philadelphia for an initial 30-day period, through October 23, 2008. That requirement remains in effect.

We are re-soliciting proposals from all carriers, including but not limited to Piedmont, Mesaba and Colgan, interested in providing EAS at Williamsport, with or without subsidy support, for the two-year period beginning when the carrier inaugurates full service. Carriers should file their proposals no later than September 15, 2008.

Proposals should offer service with two-pilot, twin-engine aircraft with at least 15 passenger seats. Specifically for Williamsport, we are requesting proposals for service consisting of four weekday round trips (six over the weekend) with 19-seat aircraft, three daily round trips with 30 seaters, or two daily round trips with 37-seat aircraft. We will entertain proposals to Philadelphia, New York, Washington, or any suitable hub offering connections to the national air transportation system.

Very odd that the USDOT rejected all bids based upon the aircraft and freqency not meeting the requirements of the RFB.

Both bids from Colgan and Mesaba were with the 32 and 34-seat Saab 340 (but less than 37-seats) flying 3 RT's per day. I can't find a copy of the Piedmont bid. Did the USDOT reject the Colgan and Mesaba bids because each bid a 30+seat aircraft X 3 RT's per day and not a 30-seat aircraft X 3 RT's per day???

That would be kinda stupid.
