USAirways/America West Merger Talks -WSJ

US Airways talking merger, report says

CHARLOTTE (Observer) - US Airways is reportedly in advanced talks to merge with Arizona-based America West Airlines.

Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal said in its Tuesday online edition that the merged airline would immediately begin flying under the US Airways name but would keep operations separate for a time while the two companies combined aircraft and employees.

Never a dull moment in this business. If it were come to fruition, I cannot see United being very happy about US/AWA participating in the Star Alliance. IMHO, the menage trois of Skyteam Partners DL-NW-CO seems problematic. It would not surprise me to see a shift in partnerships as a result of a US/AWA combination. Perhaps it is wishful thinking on my part, but a reallignment seems possible.

Bars? What does that mean? Are you implying that I am a drunk? Explain?

xoxo bars are candy bars that are given out from the snack basket on US Airways flights in first class. I wrongly assumed that where your handle is from.

Sorry,

According to the Washington Post, it appears more likely that HP will simply make a $100 million investment in US, and launch a broad codesharing alliance. Makes much more sense than HP committing financial suicide IMHO.

Finally, forget all of that, and take a look at the route map again, think back to PSA, and prey it does not happen.

Why do you keep saying this? The PSA route map didn't cover as much as the HP route map. If you're worried about middle america coverage, maybe that's why Republic and Air Wisconsin were brought into the mix. Use the regionals to cover the areas that US and HP don't.

I think a US/HP merger would work. Just get rid of a lot of dead wood first.

That's a mighty big forest to clean up don't you think? 😀

YES it is but you would love to be there for the deforesting wouldn't you PB.

OK, here's a reach.....

Someone said earlier in this thread that the first bidder is not always the winner.....

What about this whole HP thing being a tool to get UA back to the table? OR what about this eventually turning into a 3 way combination of some sort??? Stranger things have happened, ya know...

Now IF HP and US combine, wouldn't it be likely that Airbus or GE would wind up with lots of used airplanes on their hands? Am I correct in assuming that AA and DL are the only airlines operating the same type with different engine types (AA 757-RR&PW, DL 767-300 GE & PW)?? Would it make sense to keep Airbii with both IAE and SNECMA engines?

Whichever way it shakes out, folks, I wish you all the best.......

Today you're making me laugh. Just make sure it's a titanium saw blade. I think it's petrified wood you have to tackle at US.

Is Ted Reed and airline reporter or does he work for an airline Employee Communications Department?

USA320Pilot:

It says: Ted Reed, staff writer. Staff writer would be an employee of the Communications Department.

Bob,

I am sure you would need more than a saw--because you'd want to get to the "roots" of the problem now wouldn't you???

In addition to the airlines directly involved, another likely victim of a US/HP merger would be United
[post="263138"][/post]
Another potential victim could be Mesa, who operates a bunch of CRJs and a few Dash-8s on behalf of America West.

Didn't U have the west coast in their pocket when they took over PSA? Wow, they really distroyed that route system. Gosh, I hope they don't try to do that to HP??

I believe the middle of the US-HP "barbell" needs to be filled in too, and one potential weapon management has to do that is the EMB-170/190. The airplane has domestic long range capability, works well in shorthaul markets, and is a good tool for market development.
